What's the minimum weatherproof rating for outdoor IP cameras?
IP66 is the minimum — dust-tight with high-pressure water-jet resistance. IP67 adds 1-meter submersion tolerance for 30 minutes, which matters in flood-prone zones, below-grade parking, or cameras near irrigation. For cameras mounted below 10 feet, specify IK10 vandal-resistance in addition to IP rating.
Do I need 4K outdoor IP cameras?
Not necessarily. Pixel density across the actual scene matters more than raw megapixels. A 4MP camera with a proper focal-length lens often outperforms a 4K camera with the wrong optics — better sensor per-pixel performance, lower bitrate, less storage. Use our DORI pixel density guide to plan resolution by deployment distance instead of defaulting to 4K.
How far can IR illumination reach on outdoor cameras?
Advertised IR range is a best-case spec — real effective identification range is often half the rated distance due to atmospheric conditions, reflectance, and image processing. For nighttime deployments, consider color night vision (Hanwha Wisenet T, Hikvision ColorVu, i-PRO Color Night Vision) which captures usable color video at near-total darkness using F1.0 optics and supplemental warm-white illuminators.
Are Hikvision outdoor cameras NDAA compliant?
No. Hikvision and Dahua are restricted under NDAA Section 889 for U.S. federal, state government, and critical-infrastructure procurement. For NDAA-required deployments, specify Axis, Hanwha, i-PRO, Pelco, or Digital Watchdog. Private commercial deployments can use Hikvision without restriction.
What PoE rating do outdoor cameras require?
Fixed outdoor cameras with heater + IR typically require PoE+ (802.3at, 25.5W). Outdoor PTZ cameras, thermal-plus-visible dual-sensor cameras, and cameras with integrated wipers require PoE++ (802.3bt, 60-90W). A 24-port PoE+ switch can't always power 24 cameras simultaneously at peak — see why your PoE switch fails after 18 cameras for budget planning.
Do outdoor IP cameras work with any NVR or VMS?
ONVIF Profile S and G conformance — not just "ONVIF-compatible" labeling — is what guarantees interoperability. Check spec sheets for explicit Profile S (live streaming) and Profile G (recording) conformance. Certified ONVIF cameras work with Milestone XProtect, Genetec, Avigilon, Exacq, and most major VMS platforms. Proprietary analytics metadata may require vendor-specific VMS integration.
