What to consider when buying

• Cable category — Cat6a is the floor for new commercial; Cat7/7a/8 only if 25G/40G copper aggregation is on the roadmap.
• Shielded vs unshielded — F/UTP or S/FTP for EMI-heavy environments; UTP elsewhere.
• PoE+ and PoE++ support — 802.3bt Type 4 (90W) requires Cat6a minimum due to thermal de-rating; bundles must be sized accordingly.
• Port density — 1U 24-port, 1U 48-port (high-density), 2U 48-port (angled for cable management).
• Fiber type — OS2 singlemode for runs over 400m or any campus backbone; OM4 for 100G short-reach; OM5 SWDM for emerging 400G.
• Connector and termination — LC duplex is the volume standard; MTP/MPO trunks for high-density datacenter aggregation.
