Direct Thermal Labels
Direct thermal labels print without a ribbon, using heat-sensitive paper that darkens under the printhead. They are the low-total-cost choice for short-service-life labels such as shipping, receiving, and pick slips where the label will be read within weeks.
Plan Your Deployment
- Shelf life and exposure tolerance (sunlight, heat, oils)
- Label facestock (topcoated vs. uncoated) for printhead longevity
- Dimensions and core size for the target printer family
- Perforation and gap style for sensor detection
- Labels per roll and runs-per-shift throughput planning
What to Look For
Direct thermal is cheaper per label but fades under heat and UV; do not use for multi-month asset tags or anything shipped through hot trucks in summer. Topcoated DT stock protects printheads and extends head life in dusty warehouse environments. Confirm the gap and reflective mark specs match your printer's sensor.
Common Deployment Scenarios
Direct thermal dominates shipping labels, pick tickets, parcel labels, and grocery scale labels. It is also standard for patient wristbands and short-cycle visitor badges. Switch to thermal transfer when the label must survive beyond 6 months or face abrasion, chemicals, or direct sun.
