Axis 02134-001 M2036-LE 4MP Bullet Camera

The Axis 02134-001 (M2036-LE) is a compact outdoor bullet camera engineered for perimeter monitoring, facility entrances, and weather-exposed deployments where vandal resistance and local processing matter. Built to IP66 and IK08 standards, it combines weather-tight construction with integrated IR illumination and edge-based deep learning to handle temperature swings from -30°C to 50°C without environmental enclosures. The fixed 2.4mm lens delivers a 130° horizontal field of view—wide enough for corridor and vestibule coverage. If you operate outdoor IP cameras at scale and need to reduce storage cost and backhaul bandwidth, this model justifies serious consideration.

Key Features

• 4 MP Resolution (2304×1728 or 2688×1512): Captures facial and vehicle detail at distance while delivering up to 30 fps, so rapid-motion events won't result in dropped frames during entrance monitoring or perimeter sweeps. Adequate for forensic-quality identification tasks in access-control and gate scenarios.
• H.265 and H.264 Compression with Bitrate Control: H.265 cuts storage footprint and network bandwidth roughly 40–60% compared to H.264 on equivalent scenes—a tangible cost reduction across 24/7 multi-camera deployments. Lower bitrate means less strain on your WAN uplink and smaller NVR storage requirements without sacrificing frame rate or resolution.
• Deep Learning Processing Unit (DLPU) with Object Analytics: Runs human and vehicle detection directly on the camera, eliminating the need to stream raw video to a central analytics server. This cuts real-time alert latency and dramatically reduces bandwidth consumption on the backhaul link. Local processing also means a network outage won't blind your detection pipeline—the camera continues to process events independently.
• Day/Night with Integrated IR Illumination: Built-in 850nm IR LEDs with 0.5m (1.6 ft) range handle close-proximity detection in entrance vestibules and access points. The 0.5m range is modest but adequate for facial capture at doors; don't expect distant perimeter coverage in total darkness. Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) balances bright sunlight and interior shadows in mixed-light scenarios typical of facility entrances.
• IP66 and IK08 Rugged Design: IP66 means direct rain and dust spray won't penetrate the housing—suitable for outdoor mounting without a protective shroud. IK08 absorbs moderate impact (2kg weight dropped from 1.5m), providing sufficient vandal deterrence for typical installations. The -30°C to 50°C operating range eliminates the need for heated or cooled enclosures in extreme climates.
• PoE+ Power (Class 3, ~12.95W): Draws under 13W via standard 802.3at PoE+, so it won't exhaust a shared switch port's power budget. Single cable for video and power simplifies installation, particularly in retrofit scenarios where dedicated power runs don't exist.
• MicroSD Local Recording: Supports edge storage for continuous local failsafe recording if your WAN or central NVR goes offline. Enables independent retention without centralized dependency.
• ONVIF Profile S Compliance: Integrates with third-party network video recorders and VMS platforms without vendor lock-in. Milestone XProtect, Genetec, and generic ONVIF-compliant systems recognize the stream natively.
• HTTPS Encryption and Authentication: Protects video stream integrity and credential transmission in transit. Meets baseline cybersecurity hygiene for regulated or sensitive deployments.

Integration and Compatibility

The 02134-001 pairs with any PoE+ switch capable of delivering Class 3 (30W) power per port. Standard Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ switches (Cisco, HPE Aruba, Juniper) handle multiple units without issue. The camera's ONVIF Profile S compliance ensures compatibility with enterprise VMS platforms, third-party NVRs, and video management software from independent vendors. Mounting is straightforward via the standard ball mount included in the box, supporting both wall and ceiling installations in outdoor environments.

When to Choose a Different Model

If you need longer IR range (beyond 0.5m) for perimeter or parking-lot coverage in total darkness, consider a higher-wattage variant in the Axis outdoor bullet line with 10m+ IR capability. If you require PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) for wide-area coverage or active monitoring, a PTZ model would be more appropriate. For indoor-only deployments, indoor-rated compact bullets will be more cost-effective. The 02134-001 is purpose-built for fixed-angle, outdoor, short-range facial and entrance monitoring—optimize your choice accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the Axis 02134-001 work with Milestone XProtect and other third-party VMS platforms?

A: Yes. The 02134-001 is ONVIF Profile S compliant, which means it integrates natively with Milestone XProtect, Genetec, and any ONVIF-compatible VMS. You are not locked into Axis-only management software.

Q: What is the IR range on the 02134-001, and is it suitable for perimeter monitoring in complete darkness?

A: The 02134-001 has an integrated 850nm IR range of 0.5m (1.6 ft), which is adequate for close-proximity access control and entrance vestibule scenarios. For distant perimeter or parking-lot coverage in total darkness, you should choose a higher-power IR variant with 10m+ range.

Q: How much bandwidth and storage does H.265 save compared to H.264 on the 02134-001?

A: H.265 typically reduces file size and network bitrate 40–60% compared to H.264 on the same scene, depending on motion complexity and lighting. On a 24/7 multi-camera deployment, this translates to meaningful savings in NVR storage and WAN uplink cost.

Q: Can the 02134-001 record locally if the central NVR or network goes down?

A: Yes. The 02134-001 supports microSD card recording, allowing continuous failsafe local retention if your WAN or central recorder goes offline. This provides independent backup and reduces single-point-of-failure risk.

Q: Is the Axis 02134-001 suitable for outdoor wall mounting without a protective enclosure?

A: Yes. The IP66 rating means direct rain and dust spray will not penetrate the housing. IK08 resistance provides moderate vandal deterrence. The -30°C to 50°C operating range eliminates the need for heated or cooled enclosures in extreme climates, though you should still consider sun glare and extreme UV exposure when positioning the camera.

Q: What is the power consumption of the 02134-001, and will it work on standard PoE?

A: The 02134-001 draws approximately 12.95W via PoE+ (802.3at Class 3). Standard PoE (802.3af, 15.4W per port) may be marginal under heavy IR use; PoE+ is recommended to ensure stable operation.

The Axis 02134-001 sits in a sweet spot for fixed-angle outdoor access control and entrance monitoring. The combination of 4MP resolution, DLPU edge analytics, and H.265 compression makes it a low-friction choice if you're building a perimeter network without a dedicated analytics server. The key question isn't whether it's capable—it is—but whether your deployment needs the 0.5m IR range and whether you can live with a fixed 130° FOV.

Technical Highlights:

• H.265 Compression: Cuts storage and bandwidth 40–60% versus H.264. On a 20-camera 24/7 deployment, that's the difference between a 4TB and a 10TB recorder—real money.
• DLPU Object Analytics: Runs detection locally, reducing backhaul traffic and latency. In access-control scenarios, this means faster alerts and less dependency on a remote VMS for real-time processing.
• PoE+ Class 3 (~12.95W): Minimal power draw keeps you from exhausting a shared PoE switch's budget. You can stack multiple 02134-001 units on a modest Gigabit PoE+ switch without adding infrastructure.
• IP66 / IK08 / -30°C to 50°C Operating Range: No enclosure needed. Mount it on the wall, forget about it, and expect it to survive Nordic winters and desert summers without maintenance.

Deployment Considerations:

• IR Range Gotcha: The 0.5m IR is entry-level. If your access point is farther than arm's reach from the camera, don't rely on IR—ensure adequate ambient lighting or choose a higher-power IR variant.
• Fixed Lens Limitation: The 2.4mm 130° FOV is wide but fixed. If you need to zoom or pan, you're looking at a different product. Verify your coverage requirements on a site survey before committing to fixed-angle units.
• MicroSD Local Storage: A nice failsafe, but don't treat it as your primary recorder. Use it as backup-of-last-resort, not as your NVR replacement.

Deploy the 02134-001 at facility entrances, badge readers, gate access points, and loading-dock entry zones where fixed 130° corridor coverage is sufficient, ambient light is adequate, and you want to reduce bandwidth and NVR storage overhead through edge processing. Skip this model if you need PTZ, long-range IR, or indoor-only mounting.
