Expansion Modules

Expansion modules add reader inputs, supervised zone inputs, or relay outputs to access control and intrusion panels, extending the base platform without replacing the main controller. They communicate back to the panel over RS-485 or proprietary bus, and usually share the panel's power supply and enclosure.

What to Look For

Keep the module family consistent with the head-end panel to avoid firmware mismatches. Bus length, addressing limits, and shared power supply capacity are the three common constraints that determine how many modules a single panel can support. Always budget for surge protection on any module with wiring leaving the building.

Common Deployment Scenarios

Expansion modules are used when adding doors or zones in a second wing, extending coverage on a retrofit, or supporting multi-factor credentials at a subset of high-security openings. They are a lower-cost upgrade than replacing the panel with a larger model.
