Start With the Run, Not the Cable
Three things decide everything downstream: distance, bandwidth and PoE load. The 100 metre limit everyone quotes is 90 m of solid horizontal cable plus 10 m of patch cords across both ends. Design to 90. If your longest run measures 95 m on the reel, the answer is not a better cable — it is an intermediate switch, a zone box, or fibre.
PoE changes the arithmetic again. Power over Ethernet pushes current through the same conductors carrying data, current makes heat, and heat raises insertion loss. A run that certifies fine unloaded at 90 m can fail once it powers a 30 W PTZ inside a bundle of forty-eight other powered cables. Design for the load you will have in three years, not the one going up this month.
Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6A
Cat5e runs 100 MHz on 24 AWG conductors and belongs on legacy patching and short, low-power drops. Cat6 runs 250 MHz on 23 AWG, carries 10 Gigabit to 55 m, and is the sensible default for camera and access work. Cat6A runs 500 MHz, carries 10 Gigabit the full 100 m, and earns its price on heat rather than bandwidth — larger conductors and a separator spline run cooler under PoE and hold up in dense bundles.
Move to fibre when the run exceeds 90 m, crosses between buildings, passes through electrically noisy plant, or needs lightning isolation. Copper between two structures is a surge path, not a network.

Jacket Ratings: CM, CMR and CMP
This is a fire-code decision, not a performance one, and the inspector has final say. General purpose (CM/CMG) suits single-floor interior runs. Riser (CMR) resists carrying flame vertically and is required in shafts and between floors. Plenum (CMP) is required in any space used to move environmental air — which in most commercial buildings means the void above the drop ceiling, whether or not anything is labelled.
Plenum costs meaningfully more than riser. Buying it for a run that never enters air-handling space is money burned; guessing wrong the other way means pulling finished cable out of a finished ceiling.
Solid, Stranded, and the CCA Trap
Solid conductor is for permanent horizontal runs — it punches down cleanly and has lower attenuation. Stranded is for patch cords, where flexibility matters over short distances.
Copper-clad aluminium is aluminium wire with a copper skin, sold at a tempting discount. Its resistance is roughly 58 percent higher than copper, which spends the PoE voltage budget before it reaches the device; it runs hotter inside bundles; and it work-hardens and fractures at terminations. It is not TIA compliant and cannot form part of a certified channel. If a bulk price looks impossible, check the conductor.
Termination and the Work Area
Permanent runs land on keystone jacks at the work area and a patch panel at the head end, joined by patch cables. That is the standard because it is testable, serviceable, and does not bury a crimped plug above a ceiling.
Match component category to cable category — Cat6A cable on Cat5e jacks is a Cat5e channel. Shielded cable needs shielded connectors and a bonded path to ground, or the shield becomes an antenna. Finish with faceplates or surface boxes, and use a zone box where runs consolidate mid-pathway.
The Head End
Plan the rack elevation before pulling cable. Budget one rack unit of horizontal cable management for every patch panel and every switch, size panels twenty-five to fifty percent above today's port count, put the UPS at the bottom, and keep front-to-back airflow clear with blanking panels in empty units. Leave a service loop so a damaged termination can be redone without a re-pull.
Grounding and Bonding
TIA-607 is the standard and the section most often skipped. Every telecom room gets a busbar, busbars bond back to the building grounding electrode system, and racks bond to the busbar with a proper conductor — not a painted screw and not rail-to-rail contact. Shielded cabling makes this mandatory rather than advisory: an ungrounded shield collects noise with nowhere to put it.

Test, Certify, Label
Verification proves the pairs are in the right order. Qualification confirms the link supports a given speed. Certification measures insertion loss, NEXT, return loss and delay skew against TIA limit lines and produces a pass/fail report per drop — it is what manufacturer warranties require and what a general contractor means by certified.

Bulk cable in the right category and jacket, pure copper, plus fifteen percent waste. Keystone jacks matched to the cable. Patch panels with growth headroom. Faceplates for each work area. Patch cables for both ends. One rack unit of cable management per panel and per switch. A busbar and bonding conductors per room. Labels for both ends of every run. And the right level of tester for what you are being paid to prove.
