• Fiber mode: match the optics and the installed fiber. Multimode OM3/OM4/OM5 (aqua, violet, lime) for short links; singlemode OS2 (yellow) for long links.
• Reach: 10GBASE-SR runs to 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4; singlemode LR optics run to 10 km.
• Connector: most switch optics use duplex LC; MPO/MTP for 40G/100G parallel optics and trunks.
• Polish: never mate APC (green) with UPC (blue) connectors.
