What to Look For When Buying

The six decisions that matter most before you spec.

Match Bracket to Camera + Surface

A dome camera mounted on a textured wall needs a wall-mount adapter with a gasket; mounted on a pole it needs a pole-mount arm; mounted on an eave it may need a pendant. Third-party brackets exist but brand-specific brackets include proper camera cable routing and weather gasketing. Buying a $40 generic bracket to save on a $80 Axis bracket usually costs more in installation time.

Enclosure NEMA Rating

NEMA 3R = light rain; NEMA 4 = splash + driving rain; NEMA 4X = above + corrosion resistance (coastal, industrial); NEMA 6 = temporary submersion. For weather-exposed camera enclosures, NEMA 4X is the commercial standard. For mission-critical outdoor gear, pair NEMA 4X enclosure + IP67 camera + IK10 vandal rating.

C/CS-Mount Lens Selection

Box cameras use interchangeable C-mount (17.526mm flange) or CS-mount (12.5mm flange). Lens focal length + sensor size determines field of view: a 4mm lens on a 1/3" sensor gives ~60° horizontal FOV. Our DORI guide covers lens selection by scene distance. F-stop matters for low-light; P-iris for auto-exposure.

IR Illuminator Wavelength

850nm IR is more efficient but produces a faint visible red glow (deterrent or accidental giveaway, depending on use case). 940nm is truly covert but requires ~2x the power for the same effective range, and many cameras have lower sensitivity at 940nm. Match illuminator wavelength to camera IR-cut filter spec, or image washout results.

Power Supply Sizing & Distance

12VDC cameras at 100ft from a power supply drop significant voltage over 18-gauge wire — a camera rated for 12V may see 10.5V at the camera end under load, triggering brownout resets. For long runs, use a higher-voltage power supply (24VAC or 48VDC) and step down at the camera. UL-listed surveillance power supplies (Altronix) publish voltage-drop tables.

Cable Jacket Rating

Indoor Cat6 is rated CM (communications); plenum-rated CMP is required for above-drop-ceiling runs per NFPA 70. Outdoor/direct-burial Ethernet is a different product (CMX, direct-burial gel-filled). Mixing jacket ratings causes code violations and fire inspector rejections. Always spec by run environment, not lowest-cost SKU.

Technology Stack

The specs and acronyms that actually affect outdoor performance.

NEMA vs IP Rating Systems

NEMA is the US enclosure standard (NEMA 1-13); IP is the international standard (IP00-IP68). Rough crosswalk: NEMA 4 ≈ IP66, NEMA 4X ≈ IP66 + corrosion, NEMA 6 ≈ IP67. Some spec sheets list both; when only one is given, the crosswalk is approximate. For coastal, industrial, and food-processing environments, specify NEMA 4X or IP66 + stainless steel.

C-Mount vs CS-Mount Lenses

C-mount: 17.526mm flange focal distance. CS-mount: 12.5mm flange. CS cameras accept both lens types (C lenses need a 5mm adapter ring); C cameras accept only C lenses. Most modern box cameras are CS-mount for lens flexibility. Lens thread is 1-inch × 32 TPI on both.

F-Stop / Iris

F-stop = focal length ÷ aperture diameter. Lower F-stop (wider aperture) means more light, better low-light performance, shallower depth of field. F1.4 is very low-light capable; F1.8 is common commercial spec. P-iris (precise iris) lenses auto-adjust aperture based on scene lighting — reduces over-exposure during day, improves low-light at night.

850nm vs 940nm IR

IR illuminators at 850nm are more energy-efficient and the sensitivity of most camera IR-cut filters peaks here — but 850nm produces a faint visible red glow from the LEDs. 940nm is invisible to human eye but requires ~2x the power or shorter effective range. Many covert-deployment cameras are re-tuned for 940nm sensitivity.

UL-Listed Power Supplies

Underwriters Laboratories listed power supplies meet safety standards for overcurrent, overvoltage, and enclosure isolation. UL 294 specifies additional requirements for access control; UL 603 for security burglary; UL 1310 for Class 2 power. Insurance and code requirements increasingly specify UL-listed supplies — particularly in commercial and institutional installations.

Plenum vs Riser vs PVC Cable

Plenum-rated (CMP) cable uses low-smoke FEP jacket for use above suspended ceilings where smoke spreads through return-air plenums. Riser (CMR) is for vertical shaft runs between floors. PVC (CM) is for open office runs only. Using CM in plenum spaces violates NFPA 70 — costly inspector rejection if caught.

New Construction Retrofit

Cat6A plenum cable pulled to camera locations with proper service loops, 2-gang electrical boxes at each dome location with weatherproof backbox, Cat6A patch panel at the IDF, UL-listed power supplies for any 12V/24V camera, labeled and tested before cameras are mounted.

Coastal / Corrosive Environment

NEMA 4X stainless-steel enclosures for outdoor cameras, 316-grade stainless brackets, silicone dielectric grease on every connector, hot-dipped galvanized or powder-coated steel poles. Budget 15-25% more on accessories vs. standard outdoor — and plan for 3-5 year inspection cycles rather than 10.

Box-Camera LPR Application

Box camera with 50-150mm telephoto lens, dedicated 850nm IR illuminator at same height as camera, pole-mount bracket with junction box, UL power supply for camera + illuminator. LPR-specific enclosures with anti-reflective glass to avoid nighttime IR bloom. Typical deployment: dedicated lane camera, not general-purpose surveillance.

Parking Garage Retrofit

Existing analog coax cable replaced via NVT Phybridge or similar PoE-over-coax, vandal-resistant dome enclosures at ground level, low-profile bullet cameras on ceiling, LED-plus-IR-compatible illuminators to handle harsh fluorescent lighting. Enclosures rated for vehicle-exhaust environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the OEM bracket for my camera, or will a generic bracket work?

For most commercial installations, specify the OEM bracket. Brand-specific brackets include proper cable routing, gasketed weather seals, and mounting-hole patterns matched to the camera — which matters more than the cost savings of a generic bracket. Generic brackets are acceptable for indoor standard-dome cameras on flat surfaces; for outdoor, vandal-rated, or pendant applications, use OEM.

What NEMA rating do I need for outdoor camera enclosures?

NEMA 4 for most weather-exposed deployments (driving rain, snow). NEMA 4X for coastal, industrial, or food-processing environments (adds corrosion resistance — typically stainless steel or fiberglass construction). NEMA 6 for temporary submersion or flood-prone areas. The IP-rating equivalent is IP66 for NEMA 4, IP66 + corrosion for NEMA 4X, IP67 for NEMA 6.

How do I choose the right lens focal length for a box camera?

Work backward from the scene. Identify the farthest point you need identification-grade coverage, use our DORI guide to calculate required pixels-per-foot at that distance, and match lens focal length + sensor size to deliver that PPF. A 4mm lens on a 1/3" sensor covers ~60° horizontal FOV; a 12mm lens on the same sensor covers ~20°. Wide FOV = shorter identification distance.

What's the difference between 850nm and 940nm IR illuminators?

Can I power an IP camera with a generic 12V wall-wart?

Not for a commercial deployment. Generic wall-warts are unregulated, not UL-listed for security applications, and typically don't include surge protection. Use a UL-listed surveillance power supply (Altronix AL series, UL 294 or UL 603) with battery backup where required. PoE is preferred when possible — single cable, centralized power management, UPS-backed.

What cable jacket rating do I need for in-ceiling runs?

Plenum-rated (CMP) cable is required for any run through a return-air plenum space above suspended ceilings (most commercial buildings). Riser (CMR) for vertical shafts between floors. PVC (CM) for open office spaces only. Using non-plenum cable in a plenum space is a fire-code violation under NFPA 70 and will be rejected by inspectors. Budget plenum cable for any building where you're not 100% sure of the return-air path.
