Wax
Wax thermal transfer ribbons are the economical choice for short-service-life labels printed on paper stocks. They suit indoor applications such as shipping, inventory, and carton labeling where the label will not face abrasion, chemicals, or extended UV exposure.
Plan Your Deployment
- Label stock the ribbon must match (paper only, for most wax ribbons)
- Core ID, width, and length for the target printer family
- Coated-side-in vs. coated-side-out printhead requirement
- Printhead compatibility across desktop and industrial platforms
- Cost per printed label for high-volume runs
What to Look For
Wax is the softest ribbon class and is not recommended for synthetic facestocks or for labels that must survive moisture, oil, or abrasion. Look for printhead manufacturer approval to avoid premature wear. Cost per label is driven by ribbon length per roll and printer usage rate.
Common Deployment Scenarios
Wax ribbons are used for retail shelf labels, carton labeling in dry environments, and short-life shipping labels. If the facility alternates between paper and synthetic labels on the same printer, consider standardizing on wax-resin to reduce changeover cost.
