Channel Count vs Bitrate Ceiling

A "32-channel" NVR doesn't mean 32 4K cameras. Aggregate bitrate — typically 320 Mbps or 512 Mbps on commercial NVRs — is the real constraint. 32 cameras × 8 Mbps each = 256 Mbps, which leaves almost no headroom for peak motion scenes. RAID vs JBOD vs Single-Drive

Single-drive NVRs fail catastrophically on disk loss. RAID 5 survives one drive loss, RAID 6 survives two, RAID 10 combines mirror + stripe. For critical deployments, specify RAID 5 minimum — and size the array for rebuild-time bitrate, which can be 4x normal write load for 24+ hours. Use surveillance-grade drives only (Seagate SkyHawk, WD Purple) — consumer and NAS drives will fail under 24/7 write workload.

VMS vs Appliance NVR

Appliance NVRs (Axis Camera Station, Hanwha Wisenet NVR, Hikvision DS-96xxx) are purpose-built, tested-together hardware with bundled licensing.
