Power is the foundation of every surveillance, access-control, and network system. Centralized, supervised, battery-backed power keeps cameras recording, doors locking, and switches forwarding during outages and surge events. Choose components sized for your load — recorder UPS, camera supplies, PoE midspans, surge protection — and your system runs through the events that take down unmanaged installations.
Plan a Reliable Power System
- Sized power supplies — 12V or 24V DC sized to total device load plus 25% headroom for spin-up, aging, and expansion.
- UPS & battery backup — runtime sized to your outage profile, with managed shutdown for NVRs and access controllers.
- PoE budgets — 802.3af, at, and bt midspans/switches sized for total port load, not just per-port maximum.
- Surge protection & grounding — at the building entrance and at outdoor camera locations exposed to lightning.
- Distribution & redundancy — rack PDUs, DIN-rail supplies for industrial cabinets, and dual-source feeds for life-safety loads.

Buyer FAQ
How do I size a UPS for my surveillance system?
Add up the wattage of every device on the UPS — recorder, switch, monitor, controller, and PoE budget for the cameras — then add 25% headroom for spin-up and aging. Multiply by your target runtime (typically 15–30 minutes for managed shutdown, 4–8 hours for site continuity) to pick a VA rating. Our team can review your bill of materials and recommend a model — submit details via the contact form.
What's the difference between PoE, PoE+, and PoE++?
PoE (802.3af) delivers up to 15.4W per port — fine for fixed-lens cameras and basic readers. PoE+ (802.3at) lifts that to 30W — covers PTZ heaters, IR illuminators, and most multi-sensor cameras. PoE++ (802.3bt Type 3/4) runs up to 60W or 90W per port for high-power thermal cameras, displays, and access-control controllers. Pick a switch or midspan whose total budget covers the sum of per-port loads, not just the per-port maximum.
Why use a midspan instead of a PoE switch?
When you have an existing non-PoE switch you want to keep, a midspan (PoE injector) adds power without replacing the switch. Midspans also help when you need to upgrade a few high-power ports (60W or 90W) without buying an entire 802.3bt switch.
Do I need surge protection on outdoor cameras?
Yes — outdoor Ethernet runs collect induced energy during nearby strikes even when the camera isn't directly hit. Inline PoE surge protectors at the camera (or at the building entry) clamp the spike and protect the recorder/switch. Critical for any pole-mount or rooftop deployment.
How do I plan power for an access-control system?
Each door typically needs 1–2A at 12V DC (controller + reader + lock + REX). Multiply by door count, then size a supervised power supply (Altronix, Lifesafety) with battery backup matched to UL 294 / NFPA 72 hold-up time for your jurisdiction. Our Senior Specialist team has working integrators who size these systems daily.
Need help sizing your system?
Our team includes working integrators who size camera-system power, PoE budgets, and access-control supplies daily. Send your bill of materials, recorder count, and target runtime — we'll recommend the right UPS, supply, and midspans before you order.
