What to Look For When Buying

The six decisions that matter most before you spec.

Resolution vs Coverage

4K isn't always the right answer. Pixel density (PPF/PPM) across the scene matters more than raw megapixels. A 4MP camera with proper lens selection often outperforms a 4K camera with the wrong focal length. See our guide on designing identification-grade coverage and engineering camera coverage properly.

IR Range & Low Light

Advertised IR range is best-case — in real deployments effective identification range is often half. Color night vision (Hanwha Wisenet T, Hikvision ColorVu, i-PRO Color Night Vision) changes the math. Why 4K cameras fail at night covers the sensor-size tradeoffs that matter more than resolution in low-light scenes.

Environmental Rating

IP66 handles weather; IP67 adds temporary submersion tolerance. IK10 vandal-resistance matters for cameras mounted below 10 feet. Extreme cold (below -30°C) requires integrated heater circuits, which add to PoE budget. Confirm both ratings for your deployment climate.

PoE Power Budget

Outdoor cameras with heaters and IR illuminators can spike to 25W+ under cold-weather operation. A 24-port PoE+ switch often can't actually power 24 cameras at peak load. See PoE budget planning and why your PoE switch fails after 18 cameras.

NDAA Section 889

Federal, state, and critical-infrastructure projects exclude Chinese-manufactured hardware. Axis, Hanwha, i-PRO, Pelco, and Digital Watchdog are NDAA-compliant. Hikvision and Dahua are restricted for federal use but unaffected for commercial deployments.

Analytics at the Edge

On-camera AI (Axis Object Analytics, Hanwha Wisenet 7 AI, i-PRO Scene Analytics, Hikvision AcuSense) processes video locally and filters false alarms before they reach the NVR. Technology Stack

The specs and acronyms that actually affect outdoor performance.

IP66 / IP67 Sealing

International Protection codes define dust and water ingress resistance. IP66 = dust-tight + high-pressure water jets. IP67 adds 1m submersion tolerance for 30 min. For exterior mounting, IP66 is minimum; IP67 preferred for below-grade or flood-prone zones.

IK10 Vandal Rating

Impact protection rated to 20 joules (roughly equivalent to a 5kg mass dropped from 40cm). IK10 housings survive deliberate attack — rocks, hammers, baseball bats. Required spec for cameras mounted below 10 feet in public or semi-public areas.

Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)

Scene lighting ratio. Entry-level cameras offer 120dB WDR; premium models reach 150dB. Matters most at doors, loading bays, and other high-contrast scenes where interior shadows and exterior sunlight meet. Hanwha Wisenet 7 hits 150dB across its premium X-series.

ONVIF Profile S + G

Industry-standard protocol for IP camera communication. Profile S = live streaming, Profile G = recording/playback. Any ONVIF-compliant camera works with any ONVIF-compliant VMS, preventing vendor lock-in. Check spec sheet for profile conformance, not just "ONVIF-compatible."

PoE+ / PoE++

802.3at PoE+ delivers 25.5W per port (enough for most outdoor cameras with heater + IR). 802.3bt PoE++ delivers 60-90W for PTZ cameras, heated housings, and integrated wipers. Plan switch power budget for simultaneous-peak not nameplate. See PoE injectors for single-port solutions.

H.265 + Smart Compression

H.265 compression cuts bitrate 40-50% versus H.264 at equivalent quality. Smart/Zipstream variants drop bitrate further during static scenes. For 24/7 recording at 30+ day retention, codec matters more than camera — see retention math for the storage implications.

Bullet cameras on 20-30ft poles at perimeter corners, domes at pedestrian walkways, LPR-capable cameras at entry/exit lanes. Typical deployment: 8-16 outdoor IP cameras + 16-channel NVR with 30-day retention.

Retail Storefront + Exterior

Outdoor domes at building corners and rear exits, LPR cameras at drive-through lanes, vandal-resistant cameras at ATM vestibules. Tie into access control and alarm systems for integrated security workflow.

K-12 School Campus

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the minimum weatherproof rating for outdoor IP cameras?

IP66 is the minimum — dust-tight with high-pressure water-jet resistance. IP67 adds 1-meter submersion tolerance for 30 minutes, which matters in flood-prone zones, below-grade parking, or cameras near irrigation. For cameras mounted below 10 feet, specify IK10 vandal-resistance in addition to IP rating.

Do I need 4K outdoor IP cameras?

Not necessarily. Pixel density across the actual scene matters more than raw megapixels. A 4MP camera with a proper focal-length lens often outperforms a 4K camera with the wrong optics — better sensor per-pixel performance, lower bitrate, less storage. How far can IR illumination reach on outdoor cameras?

Advertised IR range is a best-case spec — real effective identification range is often half the rated distance due to atmospheric conditions, reflectance, and image processing. For nighttime deployments, consider color night vision (Hanwha Wisenet T, Hikvision ColorVu, i-PRO Color Night Vision) which captures usable color video at near-total darkness using F1.0 optics and supplemental warm-white illuminators.

Are Hikvision outdoor cameras NDAA compliant?

No. Hikvision and Dahua are restricted under NDAA Section 889 for U.S. federal, state government, and critical-infrastructure procurement. For NDAA-required deployments, specify Axis, Hanwha, i-PRO, Pelco, or Digital Watchdog. Private commercial deployments can use Hikvision without restriction.

What PoE rating do outdoor cameras require?

Check spec sheets for explicit Profile S (live streaming) and Profile G (recording) conformance. Certified ONVIF cameras work with Milestone XProtect, Genetec, Avigilon, Exacq, and most major VMS platforms. Proprietary analytics metadata may require vendor-specific VMS integration.
