What to Look For When Buying

The six decisions that matter most before you spec.

SIP vs Standalone Intercoms

Standalone intercoms (Aiphone JP, JO series) use proprietary cabling between substation and master — simple to install, no PBX required, limited to site-local communications. SIP intercoms (2N IP Verso, Aiphone IX) register with a phone system, answer on any SIP handset or mobile app, integrate with enterprise UC platforms. Choose SIP for multi-location or mobile-answer requirements.

Video Quality & Field of View

Intercom cameras are typically 2MP HD with 120-170° FOV — wide enough to see anyone standing at a door, including children and people in wheelchairs. Night-vision IR is standard. Video should integrate with your VMS for event-linked recording — a visitor intercom call becomes a VMS event with recorded video.

Weatherproof Rating

Outdoor door stations need IP54 minimum (dust + splash), IP65 preferred for exposed facades. Code Blue emergency towers are IP66/67 rated for year-round outdoor service. Speaker horns for outdoor paging are IP66. Indoor intercoms (corridor, office) don't need weatherproofing but benefit from IK-rated vandal resistance at public areas.

SIP PBX Integration

SIP intercoms register to a SIP PBX like any other extension — 3CX, RingCentral, Vonage Enterprise, Avaya, Cisco UC. Test interop carefully: not every PBX handles every intercom's RTP options or video-SIP (SDP) correctly. Stick with known-compatible combinations or verify with a short pilot. 2N publishes interop matrices for major PBX platforms.

Mass Notification & Emergency Paging

Modern paging isn't just background music and lunch-bell schedules — it's the emergency notification layer for active-shooter response, severe weather, evacuation. Look for SIP paging, multicast audio, strobes at IP speakers, and integration with access control lockdown triggers. CyberData V3 and Bosch PAVIRO platforms are the common enterprise choices.

ADA & Code Compliance

ADA requires that emergency call stations be accessible to wheelchair users — button height, audible feedback, visual strobe on answer. IBC and IFC require voice-capable emergency communication in certain occupancies. Specify ADA-compliant button mounting heights (48" max) and TTY/visual indicators. Code Blue stations are engineered to ADA and MUTCD spec.

SIP + RTP Protocol

Session Initiation Protocol (RFC 3261) signals call setup; Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) carries the audio and video media streams. SIP intercoms register with a PBX like any handset. G.711, G.722 (HD audio), and G.729 codecs are standard. Video-SIP uses SDP to negotiate H.264 streams.

Aiphone IX + IXG Series

Aiphone IX is SIP-based, integrates with enterprise PBX, supports network-based multi-site communication. IXG is the cloud-managed successor with mobile-app answer and residential/commercial hybrid features. Legacy JP and JO series are standalone (non-SIP).

2N IP Verso + IP Style

2N IP Verso is the modular outdoor door station — configurable with camera, keypad, card reader, fingerprint, display modules. 2N IP Style is the premium touchscreen variant. All integrate with SIP PBX, 2N Mobile Video Turbine for mobile answer, and access control systems.

Code Blue CB Series

CB-1 (one-button emergency), CB-2-MP (dual-button + megaphone), CB-4-B (tower with strobe + security camera). All IP66/IP67 weatherproof, ADA-compliant, with hot-swappable modules for field serviceability. Integrate with Code Blue ToolVox dispatch software or third-party SIP PBX.

Multicast Audio Paging

Instead of calling each speaker individually, a paging amplifier broadcasts audio to a multicast IP group (239.x.x.x) and all subscribed IP speakers play simultaneously. Scales to hundreds of speakers without per-endpoint configuration. Requires IGMP-snooping on managed switches or the broadcast floods the network.

PoE Power for Intercoms

Most SIP intercoms accept 802.3af PoE (15.4W) — sufficient for camera + speaker + keypad. Outdoor door stations with heaters may need PoE+ (802.3at). Emergency blue-light towers with strobe + heater typically require dedicated 24V power or PoE++. Verify per-product spec before pulling cable.
