What to Look For When Buying

The six decisions that matter most before you spec.

Channel Count vs Bitrate Ceiling

A "32-channel" NVR doesn't mean 32 4K cameras. Aggregate bitrate — typically 320 Mbps or 512 Mbps on commercial NVRs — is the real constraint. 32 cameras × 8 Mbps each = 256 Mbps, which leaves almost no headroom for peak motion scenes. Size by aggregate bitrate first, channel count second. See retention math.

RAID vs JBOD vs Single-Drive

Single-drive NVRs fail catastrophically on disk loss. RAID 5 survives one drive loss, RAID 6 survives two, RAID 10 combines mirror + stripe. For critical deployments, specify RAID 5 minimum — and size the array for rebuild-time bitrate, which can be 4x normal write load for 24+ hours. Use surveillance-grade drives only (Seagate SkyHawk, WD Purple) — consumer and NAS drives will fail under 24/7 write workload.

VMS vs Appliance NVR

Appliance NVRs (Axis Camera Station, Hanwha Wisenet NVR, Hikvision DS-96xxx) are purpose-built, tested-together hardware with bundled licensing. Server-based VMS (Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, Avigilon ACC) scale to unlimited channels, mix any ONVIF camera, and integrate with enterprise systems. Choose appliance for <64-channel single-site; choose VMS for multi-site or enterprise integration.

NDAA Compliance for Recorders

NDAA restrictions apply to NVRs as well as cameras — Hikvision and Dahua NVRs are excluded from federal procurement. NDAA-compliant NVR options include Axis Camera Station, Hanwha Wisenet, i-PRO, Digital Watchdog, Bosch, and server-based VMS on standard x86 hardware.

Retention & Compression

30-day retention across 32 4K cameras can be ~100 TB at H.264 — or ~50 TB at H.265 — or ~30 TB with smart-compression variants. Cameras, codec, bitrate, and motion activity all compound. Failover & High Availability

Mission-critical deployments use dual-recorder failover (Milestone XProtect Corporate, Genetec Archiver redundancy, Axis Camera Station Pro HA). Standalone appliance NVRs typically don't support true HA — their failover is limited to edge SD-card recording on the cameras themselves. If uptime matters, architect HA from day one, not as a retrofit.

ONVIF Profile G + T

Profile G standardizes recording and playback; Profile T adds advanced streaming including H.265 and analytics metadata. Certified conformance — not "ONVIF compatible" language — is what ensures playback, export, and metadata interoperability across NVRs and VMS. Check spec sheets.

H.265 / HEVC vs H.264 / AVC

H.265 cuts bitrate 40-50% at equivalent perceived quality. Storage savings compound over multi-month retention. Trade-off: H.265 decoding requires ~2x the CPU for live monitoring on mid-range VMS servers. Most new NVRs support H.265 recording and H.264 or H.265 decoding per-channel.

RAID Levels for Surveillance

RAID 5 (stripe + parity, single-drive tolerance) is the surveillance standard for 4-8 drive arrays. Surveillance-Grade HDDs

Modern deployments often combine local edge recording (30-day primary retention) with cloud archive (90-day+ compliance retention). Axis Connected Services, Milestone XProtect Cloud, Genetec Stratocast, and Verkada Command implement edge-to-cloud tiering. Bandwidth, egress costs, and compliance scope all matter.

Failover Architecture

Milestone XProtect Corporate implements true recorder failover — a standby server takes over recording within seconds of primary failure. Genetec Archiver Redundancy works similarly. Appliance NVRs typically do not support true failover; SD-card failover on the camera itself fills the gap for brief outages but not for total recorder loss.
