Overview

The CNFE2MC is a single-channel 10/100 Mbps Ethernet-to-optical media converter designed for surveillance and long-distance network extension where copper runs are impractical or introduce noise. It bridges standard RJ45 Ethernet (10/100 BASE-T/TX) to 100 BASE-FX fiber via user-swappable SFP modules, supporting distances up to 80 km depending on fiber type and SFP selection. Operates across -40°C to +75°C, making it suitable for outdoor distribution cabinets, rooftop equipment rooms, and industrial perimeter installations. Available in two form factors: the standard module (6.1 × 5.3 × 1.1 in) for rack or wall mounting, and the compact /M variant (3.3 × 2.5 × 1.1 in) for space-constrained enclosures. Draws 4W DC (8–15 VDC input) or 3W AC (CNFE2MCAC/M, 24 VAC); no external power supply needed in most installations.

Compatibility

The CNFE2MC integrates into any surveillance or access-control network topology using standard Ethernet cameras, NVRs, switches, or control equipment on the copper side. On the optical side, compatibility depends entirely on SFP module selection — multimode fiber (MMF) SFPs deliver shorter reaches (2–5 km typical) at lower cost; single-mode fiber (SMF) SFPs extend to 80 km for truly remote camera or sensor locations. The converter supports auto-negotiation on the Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps, full or half duplex) and automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover, eliminating the need for crossed cables. Optical port operates at 100 Mbps full duplex only. Designed to meet NEMA TS-1/TS-2 environmental compliance and Caltrans traffic-signal specs, ensuring compatibility with civil-infrastructure and transportation-management VMS systems.

Installation Notes

Mount the standard CNFE2MC in a 1U rack slot or on a wall using provided hardware; the compact /M variant fits inside smaller distribution boxes or sensor enclosures. Voltage transient protection on all power and signal lines guards against field surges — common in outdoor surveillance installs. No in-field optical tuning required; all alignment is factory-set. Hot-swappable modules allow replacement without powering down the entire rack. Operating humidity tolerance of 0–95% (non-condensing) suits field cabinets; verify cabinet ventilation prevents internal condensation in high-humidity coastal or swamp environments. MTBF rating exceeds 100,000 hours under specified conditions.
