Description

Comnet CWGE2MC Ethernet Media Converter

Overview

The Comnet CWGE2MC is a single-channel Ethernet-to-fiber media converter that bridges electrical (RJ45) and optical (SFP) networks at 100 or 1000 Mbps. Deploy this when you need to extend a network run beyond standard copper limits—fiber extends distance to 2 km or more depending on your SFP module choice—without adding managed switches or complex routing. The CWGE2MC auto-negotiates link speed and handles full or half duplex operation on the electrical side, so it plays well with legacy and modern equipment. Draws only 1.6 W via 12 VDC, making it suitable for rackmount or field installations where power is constrained. Supports jumbo frames (up to 2K bytes in converter mode, 16K in pure passthrough), which matters if your surveillance or data system uses large packet sizes for efficiency.

Compatibility

Works with any network device that connects via standard RJ45 Ethernet—IP cameras, NVRs, switches, servers, industrial computers. The optical side uses industry-standard SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) modules, sold separately. Verify your SFP transceiver spec matches your fiber type (singlemode or multimode) and distance requirement. The converter complies with IEEE 802.3u (100BASE-TX), 802.3ab (1000BASE-T), 802.3z (1000BASE-X), and 802.3x (flow control), so it integrates into standard Ethernet networks without special drivers or configuration.

Installation Notes

Operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C—suitable for indoor, climate-controlled, or lightly heated outdoor enclosures, but not direct sun or frost-exposed locations. Dimensions are 3.4 × 0.9 × 2.4 inches, compact enough for DIN-rail or equipment rack mounting. No in-field optical adjustments are required; alignment and power are the only setup steps. MTBF exceeds 50,000 hours, indicating stable long-term deployment in 24/7 surveillance infrastructure.
