Description

Comnet CNGE2MC 1000Mbps Media Converter

Overview

The CNGE2MC is a 1000Mbps media converter that bridges standard copper Ethernet (RJ-45) to single-mode fiber (1000BASE-FX). Deploy this when you need to extend your surveillance backbone across long distances without fiber-optic termination at every node—fiber runs up to 2 km without active repeaters, eliminating the bandwidth degradation and noise pickup that dog long runs of twisted pair. At 6W consumption via 8–15 VDC supply, it's lean enough to mount in a tight equipment rack or pole-mounted cabinet. Industrial temperature range (-40°C to +75°C operating) means it'll survive unheated equipment sheds and outdoor cable vaults without derating.

Compatibility

The CNGE2MC pairs with any standard gigabit Ethernet infrastructure: IP cameras, NVRs, switches, and backbone gear that speak 10/100/1000BASE-Tx. Fiber side requires single-mode LC connectors (verify your fiber plant uses LC terminations—some older surveillance installs use SC or ST, which require patch cord adapters). Full-duplex and half-duplex modes give flexibility on mixed-speed legacy networks. MTBF >100,000 hours ensures predictable lifecycle in 24/7 surveillance environments.

Installation Notes

Mount in NEMA or IP-rated enclosures; the unit itself is compact (6.1 × 5.3 × 1.1 in, <2 lbs). Requires unshielded twisted pair (UTP) on the copper side—keep runs under 100 meters for gigabit data rates. Supply voltage must hold 8–15 VDC steady; use a regulated industrial supply, not camera PoE injectors. Fiber jumpers should be tested for continuity and insertion loss before final installation to avoid silent video dropout. IEEE 802.3 compliance ensures standard-grade interop, but request the optical return-loss spec from the fiber terminator to confirm low-jitter performance on latency-sensitive NVR streams.
