Comnet FDX60M2 RS232/422/485 Fiber Optic Data Transceiver
Overview
The Comnet FDX60M2 is a ruggedized, industrial-grade fiber optic transceiver that bridges serial data (RS232, RS422, RS485) over multimode or single-mode fiber. It solves the fundamental problem of carrying control signals across distances where electrical copper runs would introduce noise, ground loops, or safety risk — typical in surveillance installations where PTZ controllers, access readers, or ANPR systems are remotely mounted from network equipment. The FDX60M2 carries up to 250 kbps over fiber with <10⁻⁹ bit error rate, maintaining signal integrity over 4 km (multimode) or 69 km (single-mode) links with no intermediate repeaters.
Compatibility
The FDX60M2 works with any serial device or controller using standard RS232, RS422, or RS485 protocols — Pelco PTZ drivers, Hikvision access panels, Axis device servers, or third-party serial I/O modules in surveillance and industrial automation rigs. Multimode fiber is standard for in-building and campus runs under 4 km; single-mode fiber extends range to 69 km for wide-area networks or remote site links. ST connectors are industry-standard but require exact physical matching — verify your existing fiber termination type before ordering. The unit pairs as a matched transceiver pair (one at each end of the fiber run).
Installation Notes
Operating voltage is 9–30 VDC; power consumption is 2 W per unit, so a regulated 12V supply (Comnet recommends the PS-A12060) covers most installations with margin. Environmental rating of -40°C to +75°C (operating) handles outdoor terminal boxes and unheated utility closets. Humidity tolerance to 95% is important if the transceiver is co-located with fiber patch panels in humid or damp enclosures. MTBF >100,000 hours is industrial-standard; NEMA TS-1/TS-2 and Caltrans compliance certify suitability for roadside and public-works deployments. Fiber routing must avoid sharp bends and physical stress — fiber connectors themselves are fragile and require careful handling during termination and mating.
