What to Look For When Buying

The six decisions that matter most before you spec.

PoE Power Budget Math

A 24-port PoE+ switch with 370W total budget can't actually run 24 outdoor cameras at peak 25W each. Simultaneous peak — not nameplate — is the limit. Always verify per-port PoE allocation and total budget against actual camera load. See PoE budget planning and why your PoE switch fails after 18 cameras.

328-Foot Ethernet Limit

Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A all top out at 100 meters (328ft) per TIA-568. Past that, you need a media converter to fiber, a PoE extender, or an intermediate switch. Common gotcha: in-wall patch + faceplate + drop + jumper all count against 328ft. Long runs to perimeter cameras frequently exceed the limit — plan for fiber or coax-PoE extension.

Managed vs Unmanaged Switches

Unmanaged switches work for small deployments but provide no VLAN segmentation, no QoS for video traffic, no monitoring, and no remote troubleshooting. Managed switches (Layer 2 or Layer 3) let you isolate cameras on a dedicated VLAN, prioritize video over office traffic, and diagnose link failures from a central SNMP platform. Spec managed for any deployment over 8 cameras.

UPS Sizing & Runtime

NVR + switches + cameras + access control have very different power profiles than office gear. Size UPS for actual wattage of all connected loads + 20% headroom, and calculate runtime with battery-life curves (runtime is non-linear — doubling load often cuts runtime 60%+). Surveillance UPS should provide 15-30 min to accommodate generator transfer or graceful shutdown.

Copper vs Fiber Uplinks

In-rack uplinks on 10G copper (Cat6A) work fine for short runs. Between-building and multi-floor uplinks should be fiber — single-mode for >300m, multimode for under. Fiber is also electrically isolated, which matters in lightning-prone environments. Axis, Hanwha, and Ubiquiti switches include SFP/SFP+ uplinks across most models.

Cooling & Airflow in Racks

Surveillance gear runs 24/7 — a closed rack at 90°F interior temperature will fail drives and switches faster than spec. Specify perforated doors, rack-mount fans, and leave 1U of airflow gap above/below heat-generating equipment. NVRs with internal fans need front-to-back airflow; network switches vary by vendor. Check thermal spec before sealing a wall-mount enclosure.

802.3af / at / bt PoE Standards

802.3af = 15.4W/port (entry cameras), 802.3at PoE+ = 25.5W/port (most outdoor cameras), 802.3bt PoE++ Type 3 = 60W, Type 4 = 90W (PTZ, heated, multi-sensor). Specify switch support for the highest standard your cameras need — future-proofing with PoE++ switches costs marginally more.

TIA-568 Cabling Standards

Cat5e rated to 1 Gbps at 100m. Cat6 rated to 10 Gbps at 55m, 1 Gbps at 100m. Cat6A rated to 10 Gbps at 100m with proper grounding. Use Cat6A for new surveillance cabling runs — marginal cost premium over Cat6, meaningful margin for long runs + high PoE.

SFP / SFP+ / QSFP+ Modules

Small Form-factor Pluggable optics for fiber uplinks. SFP = 1 Gbps, SFP+ = 10 Gbps, QSFP+ = 40 Gbps. Match module to switch vendor compatibility (some vendors lock to their own brand of optics). Multimode fiber with OM3/OM4 for ≤300m, single-mode for longer or future-proof runs.

VLAN Segmentation

Dedicated VLAN for surveillance isolates camera traffic from office network — improves security (camera-to-camera lateral movement blocked), performance (no contention with office traffic), and troubleshooting. Configure access-control and intercom VLANs separately. Managed switches required; unmanaged switches cannot segment.

Long-Reach PoE Extension

Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) extends Ethernet + PoE to 1,500+ feet over existing RG59 coax — ideal for analog-to-IP retrofits. Ethernet-over-UTP extenders push runs to 4,000ft over CAT cable. NVT Phybridge CHARIoT, Altronix eBridge, and Veracity Highwire are the common product families. Rate-limited to 100 Mbps typically.

UPS Topology: Line-Interactive vs Double-Conversion

Line-interactive UPS switch to battery on power failure — sufficient for office gear. Double-conversion (online) UPS convert AC→DC→AC continuously, providing perfectly conditioned power — required for sensitive SCADA/security gear in dirty-power environments. Specify double-conversion for NVRs at critical sites.

8-Camera Single-Site Retrofit

Existing network + 8 outdoor IP cameras. Add a 16-port managed PoE+ switch (Ubiquiti UniFi, Axis T85) on a dedicated VLAN. 1U rack UPS for the NVR + switch. 120-160 watts total PoE budget comfortably runs 8 outdoor cameras with heater + IR.

48-Camera Campus Upgrade

Four buildings, 48 cameras total, existing fiber backbone. Per-building 24-port PoE++ switch with SFP+ fiber uplink to core. Dedicated surveillance VLAN, QoS for video traffic, SNMP monitoring. 2-post relay rack in each IDF closet with dedicated surveillance UPS.

Perimeter Fence Line (1,200ft)

6 bullet cameras + 2 PTZs along perimeter fence, main NVR in building. Fiber media converter + outdoor-rated fiber to a PoE++ switch in a weatherproof enclosure at the fence line. Alternative: NVT Phybridge CHARIoT over existing coax for retrofit applications.

Multi-Floor Office Tower

Stacked IDFs on every floor, cameras + access control + intercom on dedicated VLANs. Cisco Catalyst or Ubiquiti UniFi Pro managed switches per floor with 10G fiber uplink to building core. Per-IDF 3U UPS. Integration with VMS and access control head-end at main BDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate PoE budget for a camera deployment?

Sum the peak wattage of every camera (not nameplate — check spec sheet for "PoE class" or "max consumption"). Add 15-20% headroom for inrush during cold-start. The result is your required simultaneous-peak PoE budget. A 24-port PoE+ switch advertised at 370W can only run about 18 outdoor cameras with heaters + IR — see PoE budget planning.

What's the maximum Ethernet cable run for an IP camera?

100 meters (328 feet) per TIA-568 — total distance from switch port to camera port. That includes in-rack patch cords, in-wall cabling, faceplate jack, and camera jumper. For longer runs, use fiber with a media converter or a long-reach PoE extender. Going past 328ft on copper causes intermittent packet loss that looks like camera problems.

Do I need managed or unmanaged PoE switches?

For more than 8 cameras or any mixed-use network (cameras sharing infrastructure with office traffic), specify managed. VLAN segmentation isolates camera traffic for security and performance; QoS ensures video gets bandwidth priority; SNMP monitoring surfaces failures before users call. Unmanaged switches are acceptable only for small standalone deployments.

What UPS runtime should I plan for an NVR + switch?

15-30 minutes of runtime at actual load is typical — enough to ride through brief outages or allow graceful shutdown before battery exhaustion. For sites with generator transfer, 5-10 minutes is sufficient. Size UPS wattage for actual connected load + 20%, and use the vendor's runtime-at-load curve (runtime is non-linear). Double-conversion UPS for sensitive or dirty-power sites.

How far can I extend PoE past 328 feet?

Ethernet-over-Coax extenders (NVT Phybridge CHARIoT, Altronix eBridge) push Ethernet + PoE to 1,500+ feet over existing RG59/RG6 coax — ideal for analog-to-IP retrofits. UTP-based extenders reach 2,000-4,000 feet on Cat cable at reduced bandwidth (typically 100 Mbps). For new runs over 328ft, fiber + PoE switch at the camera end is usually cleaner architecture.

Should I put cameras on a separate VLAN?

Yes — always.
