Description

Comnet CNFE2005S2 2-Channel Ethernet-to-Optical Media Converter

Overview

The CNFE2005S2 is a two-channel 10/100 Mbps Ethernet-to-optical media converter that multiplexes two copper Ethernet ports into a single 100 BASE-FX optical output. This solves the fiber-backbone problem in surveillance networks: run long distances (up to 20 km single-mode, 3 km multimode) without repeaters, eliminate ground loops between buildings, and segregate network domains over fiber while keeping your edge cameras on standard Ethernet PoE. The optional PoE+ models (30W or 60W) inject power onto both copper ports, so you can power cameras at the remote end without a separate PSU.

Compatibility

Works with any surveillance camera or edge device that supports 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet. The two electrical ports use auto-negotiation and automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover—no manual termination worries. The optical side accepts ST or SC connectors (specify at order time); single-mode fiber for distances beyond 3 km, multimode for short campus runs. If you need port isolation (e.g., one camera per fiber strand), Comnet's Demux feature allows splitting one fiber into two logical media converters. The Mux feature (with DIP switch config) prevents multicast flooding by designating the fiber port as a dedicated uplink.

Installation Notes

Rated NEMA TS-1/TS-2 and Caltrans compliant for traffic-critical environments. Operating range -40°C to +75°C (storage to +85°C) handles outdoor cabinet and conduit deployment. Link Fault Pass-Through detects electrical port failures and triggers the optical port state to signal the headend—critical for unattended remote sites. Non-PoE models draw 3W idle; PoE+ models require a separate 48–56V DC supply (sold separately) to deliver 30W or 60W on ports 1 and 2 per IEEE 802.3at. MTBF exceeds 100,000 hours. Standard footprint is 6.1 × 5.3 inches; mini variant available at 4.1 × 3.7 inches for tight DIN-rail spaces.
