Description

TP-Link DS108G 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch

Overview

The DS108G is an unmanaged gigabit switch designed for small-scale network expansions where port density and zero administration are priorities. Eight gigabit RJ45 ports deliver full 1 Gbps per port, sufficient for network switches supporting 4–8 IP cameras or mixed IP security equipment in compact deployments. The fanless, steel-case design means silent operation and durability in office or utility closet installations. Plug-and-play operation — no configuration required — makes it suitable for integrators who need a fast turnaround on small network extensions without managed switch complexity.

Compatibility

Works with any IP camera, NVR, or networked security device using standard gigabit Ethernet. The DS108G pairs well with PoE injector systems for powering non-PoE cameras when a managed wireless access point or PoE switch is not available. Compatible with passive PoE splitters and third-party monitoring equipment. Not intended for daisy-chaining multiple switches or high-port-count warehouse automation rigs — use a larger managed platform for those scenarios.

When to Choose a Different Model

If you require PoE power delivery integrated into the switch, PoE budget tracking, VLANs, or QoS configuration, step up to a managed gigabit PoE switch. If the deployment exceeds 8 cameras or includes mixed-speed gear (10G uplinks, fiber), consider a larger industrial-grade platform. For wall-mount or DIN-rail installations, verify bracket compatibility or select a mounting-ready variant.

Key Trade-offs

Unmanaged operation eliminates setup overhead but also removes traffic control — broadcasts and storms on one port will propagate to all others. No SNMP monitoring or remote diagnostics. Steel desktop case is compact but not IP-rated, so avoid wet or dusty environments.
