Description

Comnet FDX60S2 RS232/422/485 Bi-directional Fiber Data Transceiver

Overview

The Comnet FDX60S2 is an industrial-grade fiber transceiver that converts RS232/422/485 serial data to and from single-mode or multimode fiber over distances up to 69 km (43 miles). It solves a specific problem: extending serial control signals (PTZ commands, sensor data, access system status) across long fiber runs without electrical noise, ground loops, or copper cable voltage limitations. Use this when your surveillance backbone already has fiber infrastructure and you need to remote-mount an NVR, control head, or data aggregator without running a separate copper RS485 trunk. The FDX60S2 operates from 9–30 VDC, draws only 2W, and fits a single 1U rack slot in either compact (4.1 × 3.7 × 1.1 in) or standard (6.1 × 5.3 × 1.1 in) form factor.

Compatibility

The FDX60S2 carries one RS data channel supporting speeds up to 250 kbps — typical for PTZ camera command protocols, DVR serial I/O, and industrial sensor networks. Pair it with any surveillance system or access control panel that outputs RS232, RS422, or RS485 serial data. Multimode fiber (2-fiber duplex, ST connectors) is the standard configuration; single-mode is also available. The transceiver does not carry video, audio, or contact-closure channels — it is pure serial data. For mixed deployments (video + control data on the same fiber backbone), use this alongside dedicated video-over-fiber cards or multiplexers in the same rack.

Installation Notes

Operating temperature range is −40°C to +75°C (−40°F to +167°F), with storage to +85°C. Humidity tolerance is 0–95% relative, non-condensing. Optical power budget is 23 dB, which supports the full 69 km range at stated data rates. MTBF exceeds 100,000 hours. Connect the recommended PS-A12060 power supply to handle 9–30 VDC input; the unit will throttle to match your supply voltage. Fiber connectors are ST type. No external cooling required; passive dissipation handles the 2W draw in most indoor racks. Laser emitter is Class 1 (eye-safe per IEC 60825).
