What NFPA codes apply to my building?
NFPA 72 governs alarm system installation, testing, and inspection. NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) drives notification, egress, and detector placement based on occupancy classification (assembly, business, educational, healthcare, mercantile, residential, industrial). Your local AHJ may also enforce state amendments. When in doubt, consult the AHJ before specifying panels or notification.
Conventional vs addressable — which do I need?
Conventional zone systems work well for small buildings (under 20,000 sq ft) where zone-level granularity is sufficient and budget is the driver. Addressable systems identify each device individually — required by most modern building codes for buildings over a certain size or occupancy type, and standard for multi-tenant retrofits, healthcare, and education. Addressable also simplifies testing, maintenance, and false-alarm troubleshooting.
Where do I need CO detection?
Code requirements vary by state and occupancy. Generally: residential dwelling units with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages, transient occupancies (hotels), and some commercial buildings with combustion sources. CO detectors near sleeping areas are the most common requirement — check your local amendments to NFPA 720 and IRC.
How is fire alarm integrated with access control?
On alarm, the fire system sends a signal to the access-control panel to release locked egress doors (door-hold-open or unlock) along required egress paths. Implementation uses a monitored relay output from the FACP wired to the access controller's auxiliary input, plus an addressable monitor module on the loop. What's the typical lead time on fire panels?
Stock items — pull stations, common notification appliances, basic conventional panels — typically ship same business day or 2-3 weeks depending on configuration.
