The VM8814 is a 4-port HDMI output expansion card designed for the ATEN modular matrix switcher platform. It slots into an available output bay to deliver four independent HDMI signals — each capable of 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 at up to 60Hz in 4:2:0, or 30Hz in full 4:4:4 color — extending your matrix's reach to displays up to 15 meters away. If you're building a video matrix distribution system for a control room, digital signage wall, or AV integration project and need to add HDMI output density without replacing the chassis, the VM8814 is the card to reach for. Each port carries both video and stereo balanced/unbalanced audio via a 5-pole captive screw connector — the captive screw termination is a deliberate choice for permanent installs where a pulled cable means a lost output.
The VM8814 is an output card for the ATEN VM1600A modular matrix switcher series. It is not a standalone device and requires an available output card slot in a compatible VM1600A chassis. Verify your chassis firmware is at v2.3.221 or later — this matches the current VM8814 firmware release and ensures feature and protocol alignment. The VM1600A user manual (vm1600a-user-manual-w.pdf, updated 2023-07-11) covers card installation procedures and slot mapping. If you are integrating this into a distributed AV or AV-over-IP architecture, confirm the downstream displays accept 4:2:0 at 60Hz — not all commercial panels handle 4:2:0 at full 4K/60, and dropping to 30Hz in 4:4:4 may be the operationally cleaner choice depending on content type.
Maximum cable run is 15 meters per HDMI output — beyond that, signal integrity is not guaranteed and a fiber extender or HDBaseT stage would be required. Operating humidity ceiling is 80% RH non-condensing; avoid installs in poorly ventilated equipment rooms where condensation risk is elevated. Audio termination uses 5-pole captive screw connectors, so have a small flathead screwdriver on hand during cabling. Cards ship in pairs (carton lot: 2 pcs), which is relevant if you're purchasing to stock spares or populate multiple chassis bays in a single project.
