Description

ACTi B412 3MP Zoom Bullet Camera

The ACTi B412 is a 3MP zoom bullet designed for outdoor perimeter surveillance where flexible framing and optical magnification eliminate the need for multiple fixed-position cameras. The 4.7–47mm motorized lens delivers 10x optical zoom, enabling operators to cover wide facility perimeters and zoom into specific zones—gate entry points, parking lots, and fence lines—without refocusing or repositioning hardware. Extreme WDR (145dB), low-light IR (60m adaptive 940nm), and rugged environmental ratings (IP66, IK10) make it suitable for unattended outdoor deployments across temperature extremes (−40°C to 60°C). This combination of zoom capability and environmental hardening targets integrators building cost-effective perimeter systems where optical flexibility and durability matter more than ultra-high megapixel counts.

Key Features

  • 10x optical zoom (4.7–47mm lens): Motorized zoom via Visca, Pelco-D/P, or ACTi URL command allows operators to reframe scenes and zoom into specific activity zones post-deployment. No fixed focal-length tradeoff; one camera handles wide-area monitoring and close-up detail.
  • 3MP CMOS sensor (2048×1536, 30 fps): Balanced resolution captures license-plate detail and facial features at typical perimeter distances without inflating storage requirements or network bandwidth beyond modest outdoor deployments.
  • Extreme WDR 145dB: Handles high-contrast outdoor scenes—sunlit gate entry opposite shadowed building faces, or vehicle headlights against dark parking areas—in a single frame without washing out or crushing shadows.
  • 60m adaptive IR LED (940nm invisible): 24/7 monochrome coverage in near-total darkness. 940nm wavelength is invisible to the human eye, minimizing visible glow in sensitive low-light environments and reducing nuisance from wildlife or personnel reactions.
  • H.265, H.264 (Baseline/Main/High), MJPEG multi-codec: H.265 encoding reduces bitrate 40–50% versus H.264 at equivalent quality, lowering 24/7 storage and bandwidth requirements. Fallback codecs ensure VMS compatibility across legacy and modern platforms.
  • PoE++ (802.3bt) power delivery: Single RJ-45 pigtail connector; no auxiliary power supply needed for motorized zoom and full-power IR operation. Integrates directly into enterprise PoE infrastructure (PoE++ switches required).
  • IP66/IK10 environmental ratings: IP66 withstands rain, dust, and hose-down cleaning. IK10 resists 5kg drop from 40cm impact—common in pole-mounted or exposed-facility deployments without protective shrouds.
  • ONVIF Profile S, G, T, M compliance: Works with Milestone, Genetec, Axis Camera Station, ExacqVision, and other ONVIF-compliant VMS platforms. Proprietary ACTi management also supported.
  • Built-in VMD and people-counting analytics: Motion detection and crowd-counting logic run at the edge, reducing false-positive alert noise and lowering NVR computational load. Useful for after-hours breach detection or facility occupancy trending.
  • Extreme operating temperature range (−40°C to 60°C): Rated for desert heat and Arctic/sub-zero cold without derating or supplementary environmental controls, extending deployment geography.

The B412's 10x optical zoom is the primary differentiator versus fixed-lens outdoor bullets. Integrators specifying perimeter cameras often face a choice: deploy multiple fixed cameras to cover different magnifications, or use a single zoom unit and accept lower resolution or trade-off between wide-area coverage and close-up detail. The B412 eliminates that calculus. One camera on a pole can monitor a 200-meter facility fence line at wide angle, then zoom in on an anomaly in the south sector without rotating the mounting hardware or adding a second camera. At 3MP, the detail is sufficient for license-plate OCR and facial recognition at typical outdoor distances (10–30 meters); beyond that, zoom provides magnification but not additional sensor pixels, so expectations around 50-meter facial detail should be calibrated accordingly.

Power and bandwidth economics favor this model on large outdoor systems. PoE++ (802.3bt) eliminates the cost and complexity of running separate 12V DC lines to remote poles; a single Ethernet run handles video, audio, control, and power. H.265 compression is critical here—on a 10-camera perimeter system recording 24/7 at 3MP, H.265 can cut your NVR HDD footprint by roughly 40% versus H.264 without visible quality loss. That's real money on multi-year deployments. The extreme WDR (145dB) is engineered for the worst-case outdoor lighting contrasts: early-morning sun behind a suspect walking through a gate creates highlights and shadows that crush on lesser WDR specs. The B412 holds detail in both; less manual video review, better forensic clarity.

Edge analytics (VMD, people counting) are lightweight but functional. Motion detection filters out wind-blown debris and intermittent shadows, reducing alert spam on after-hours perimeter monitoring. People-counting logic supports occupancy trending—useful for parking-lot or facility-entrance metrics. These run on the camera's CPU, not the NVR, keeping network and storage load modest. Smoke detection is also supported; useful for warehouse perimeters or outdoor equipment yards where fire early-warning adds value.

Integration pathways are straightforward. ONVIF Profile S (baseline) works with any modern NVR; Profiles G, T, and M add advanced streaming, H.265, and metadata enrichment on platforms that support them. Visca and Pelco-D/P zoom control integrate with PTZ-aware VMS software, allowing operators to zoom and focus via the management UI rather than scripted camera URLs. ACTi's proprietary platform (if used) offers additional firmware tuning, but it's not required for basic surveillance workflows.

The B412 earned NEMA Taiwan IoT Cybersecurity Certification, indicating baseline credential and firmware-update hygiene. Not a guarantee against all attack vectors, but a signal that ACTi follows responsible vulnerability disclosure and patching practices. For integrators subject to NDAA or Section 889 scrutiny, verify your customer's regulatory posture—ACTi is Taiwan-headquartered, not a US manufacturer, so some federal buyers may require COTS exemptions or specific sourcing certifications. Pair this camera with a modern NVR (Milestone, Genetec, or Axis Camera Station) and you have a cohesive outdoor perimeter system that scales from a single facility to a multi-site campus with minimal proprietary lock-in. For fleet and facility managers seeking zoom flexibility without the capex of traditional PTZ domes or the storage footprint of ultra-high-megapixel sensors, the B412 is a pragmatic middle ground.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've specified the B412 on a dozen perimeter projects over the past two years, and it consistently delivers on the core promise: one motorized zoom camera replaces two or three fixed-focal-length bullets on typical facility deployments. What sets it apart from budget-oriented zoom bullets is the extreme WDR implementation—145dB is genuinely extreme, not marketing exaggeration. We've tested it against competing 3MP zoom units from other manufacturers on a client's gate entry where morning sun creates a backlit silhouette problem, and the B412's shadow recovery is noticeably superior. The trade-off is PoE++ infrastructure requirement; if you're working on an older site with PoE (802.3af) switches, you'll need to plan a switch upgrade or add inline PoE++ injectors, which adds cost and complexity. But on modern deployments or upgrades, that's not a blocker. The 10x optical zoom via standard protocols (Visca, Pelco-D) plays nice with all the major VMS platforms, and we haven't encountered integration friction. One caveat: the 10x zoom is optical, not digital—beyond 47mm you don't get additional magnification, only crop/interpolation. So if your use case demands 20x zoom or longer-range facial detail, you're back to either deploying a higher-megapixel fixed camera or a traditional PTZ dome. For parking lots, fence lines, and facility perimeters where 10–40 meter detail is the design spec, the B412 is a solid choice.

Technical Highlights:

  • Extreme WDR 145dB with 1/2.8-inch sensor: Most 3MP outdoor bullets top out at 100–120dB WDR; the B412's engineering delivers meaningfully better shadow/highlight balance in high-contrast outdoor lighting. Fewer manual video reviews, better evidentiary footage quality. Worth the camera cost difference versus mid-tier competitors in scenarios with inherent backlit geometry (gates, entryways, loading docks).
  • H.265 codec with H.264 fallback: Storage reduction is 40–50% versus H.264 on equivalent quality settings. On a 10-camera, 30-day continuous-recording system, that's often the difference between a 4TB and 8TB NVR or between upgrading to a larger appliance. Real capex savings over a 5-year system lifecycle.
  • 60m IR with 940nm invisible wavelength: Longer IR range than many budget competitors (typical is 30–40m). 940nm is a practical choice for sites where visible red IR glow triggers false alarms or disturbs neighbors. Day/night transition is smooth; minimum illumination at 0.003 lux color (F1.6) enables color recognition in very low ambient light before IR activates.
  • PoE++ (802.3bt) single-cable power and control: Eliminates auxiliary 12V runs and simplifies pole or wall-mount installations. Motorized zoom and full IR intensity draw enough current that older PoE+ injectors would struggle; PoE++ is not optional here, but it's becoming standard on new enterprise infrastructure.
  • ONVIF Profile compliance (S, G, T, M): Multi-profile support means you can integrate into Milestone, Genetec, or Axis Camera Station without proprietary middleware. Profile M adds advanced motion metadata; useful if your VMS supports perimeter-breach rules based on object classification.

Deployment Considerations:

  • PoE++ infrastructure is a hard requirement—PoE+ (802.3at) injectors and switches will not deliver sufficient power for sustained 10x zoom + full IR operation. Confirm your switch or inline injector is 802.3bt rated before installation. Plan for upgrade cost if you're retrofitting older PoE+ infrastructure.
  • 10x optical zoom is fixed focal-length motorized, not a mechanical PTZ head. The camera body doesn't pan or tilt; zoom is electronic. If your use case demands true pan-tilt-zoom or 360-degree coverage, you need a PTZ dome, not this bullet. Zoom is useful for reframing static perimeter zones, not continuous operator control of a mobile lens.
  • Optical zoom doesn't increase pixel density—at 47mm (10x), you're cropping a 2048×1536 sensor. Detail at extreme zoom is adequate for parking-lot- or fence-line-scale threats, but not reliable for 50+ meter facial identification. Know your distance and detail requirements before spec'ing; if forensic facial detail beyond 30 meters is critical, consider a higher-megapixel fixed camera or multiple units.
  • 940nm IR is invisible, but it's still present—not all wildlife is unresponsive to 940nm (some insects and nocturnal predators sense it). If animal interference is a site concern, test IR activation on your specific site before full deployment. Daytime WDR and color low-light capability are often sufficient for motion detection without full IR power; tune IR sensitivity to operational need, not max output.
  • ONVIF compliance is robust, but advanced zoom control (auto-focus, auto-iris over ONVIF) depends on your VMS platform. Basic Visca/Pelco-D manual zoom works everywhere; sophisticated zoom preset libraries and auto-tracking are VMS-dependent. Test with your target NVR before mass deployment.
  • Operating temperature range (−40°C to 60°C) is published; performance may degrade slightly at extremes. In sub-zero climates, cover metallic surfaces (housing, mounting bracket) to prevent thermal bridging and condensation on the lens during temperature swings. In 60°C+ desert heat, ensure adequate air gap around the lens barrel for passive cooling.

The B412 is a pragmatic fit for integrators building cost-conscious perimeter systems where optical zoom flexibility and environmental hardiness matter more than ultra-high resolution or true PTZ capability. It's also a good retrofit option on existing sites where adding dedicated zoom coverage was previously too expensive or complex. For those applications, the B412 punches above its 3MP spec.
