ACTi B44 3MP Zoom Bullet Camera with 10x Optical Zoom

We've deployed the ACTi B44 across parking facilities, campus perimeters, and shipping yards where a single camera must frame both approach context and zoomed detail. The real-world advantage of the 10x optical zoom is the elimination of mounting-point redundancy — instead of installing two or three fixed cameras to cover a loading dock (one wide, one entrance, one close-up), a single B44 on a pole gives you all three fields of view without moving the camera. H.264 Main profile bitrate is reasonable (2-4 Mbps at 30fps depending on scene complexity), so 16+ cameras fit on a gigabit network without congestion. ONVIF Profile T support means H.265 streaming is available if your VMS supports it, further cutting bandwidth. The PoE+ Class 3 draw is genuinely under 13W — we've never blown a PoE budget on a site running 24+ B44s.

Technical Highlights:

• 10x Optical Zoom (4.9–49 mm): No digital zoom, no resolution loss at magnified focal lengths. In environments where wide situational awareness and zoomed investigative detail must come from a single location, a 10x zoom eliminates the capex and integration overhead of deploying two separate fixed-lens cameras.
• IP67 / IK10 Rating: IP67 means full dust and rain protection — withstands submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. IK10 (5kg impact from 40cm) is the second-highest impact rating in the IK scale, sufficient for pole-mounted and exposed ceiling locations where accidental contact or hail is expected.
• 850nm IR with 40m Range: Day/night switchable (automatic or manual). At 40m distance you get monochrome frames with recognizable person silhouettes and vehicle shapes — genuine 40m, not theoretical 60m with unusable lux levels. The 0.003 lux color minimum and zero-lux B/W IR on mean you capture usable frames from dusk through mid-night with no external lighting investment.
• 88dB WDR: Handles scenes where the sun is behind a subject (backlit face, vehicle against bright sky) or where vehicle headlights wash the frame. WDR doesn't replace proper lighting, but it eliminates the silhouette problem common on entry-point cameras.
• ONVIF Profiles S, G, T, Q: Profile S is mandatory for any VMS claiming ONVIF. Profiles G, T, and Q add sophisticated metadata (bounding boxes, pose estimation), H.265 codec support, and advanced motion analysis. This B44 can talk to Milestone, Genetec, Exacq, Vivotek, and generic RTSP consumers without vendor lock-in.
• Visca / Pelco-D / Pelco-P PTZ Control: Standard PTZ protocol support means the camera integrates with your existing PTZ joystick or automation scheduler — no custom firmware or proprietary control headaches. Preset recall and automated pan/tilt sequences work out of the box.

Deployment Considerations:

• 1.3MP resolution is adequate for presence, body movement, and vehicle detection, but plate-recognition accuracy drops beyond 30-40 feet depending on lighting. If your use case requires crisp 60-foot plate reads, consider moving to a 4MP or 8MP fixed-length camera instead; the B44's strength is zoom flexibility, not ultra-high resolution.
• The RJ-45 pigtail connector is excellent for rapid PoE connection but requires weatherproof cable management in direct rain or hose-down environments. Use an IP67-rated junction box or M12-style sealed connector panel — standard cable boots are inadequate.
• Pan/tilt/zoom control via Visca or Pelco requires your NVR or control platform to support those protocols. If you're on a VMS that only supports ONVIF stateless zoom commands, you lose the ability to recall presets and automate zoom sequences — you'd be zooming manually only. Confirm your VMS supports Visca or Pelco before design-in.
• The manual GPS position setting is useful for multi-site asset tracking, but it's not automatic geolocation — you configure latitude/longitude once at setup. If you need real-time GPS tracking or mobile camera positioning, this isn't the right platform.
• Extreme temperature rating (-40°C to 50°C) is real — the optics and electronics are rated for arctic and high-desert exposure. In those climates, you don't need a climate-controlled enclosure. In temperate zones, the rating is a safety margin, not a necessity.
• Smoke Detection analytics is edge-based but requires training and tuning — it's not a fire-detection system. Use it as a motion trigger for incident review, not as a life-safety alarm.

The B44 is the right choice if you're replacing multiple fixed-lens cameras with a single zoom-capable asset, or if your deployment requires both wide perimeter context and zoomed detail from a single mounting point.
