Description

ACTi Q84 20MP Outdoor Multi-Imager 360° Dome Camera

The ACTi Q84 is a 20MP multi-imager dome camera designed for wide-area outdoor surveillance where continuous 360° panoramic awareness is required without deploying multiple single-perspective fixtures. Using four synchronized 5MP sensors in a single compact dome, the Q84 eliminates blind spots and the capital and wiring complexity of camera arrays. This design suits campuses, transportation hubs, critical infrastructure perimeters, parking facilities, and retail yards where you need full situational awareness from a single mounting point.

Key Features

  • 20MP Four-Sensor Array: Four 5MP channels (5120×1920 per sensor) synchronized into a unified 360° field-of-view. Each sensor operates independently, allowing fine-tuned pan/tilt framing and localized analytics without cropping or stitching artifacts.
  • F1.2 Aperture with WDR: Wide aperture and Wide Dynamic Range (120dB+) handle simultaneous backlit and shadowed zones — parking-lot scenes with bright vehicles and dark building facades, for example — without detail loss or blown highlights.
  • IR Illumination to 50 Meters: 850nm infrared system extends night vision to 50m; color sensitivity at <0.002 lux enables monitoring in near-total darkness (moonless, starlight only). Operational for after-hours perimeter sweeps and shift-change verification.
  • H.265 & H.264 Compression: H.265 (HEVC) reduces bitrate 40–50% versus H.264 on equivalent quality — material savings on 24/7 multi-channel streaming. Codec fallback ensures compatibility across legacy and modern VMS platforms.
  • PoE++ (802.3bt) Power: Class 6 PoE++ eliminates separate 24V lines — single Cat6A cable delivers power, video, and audio. Typical draw under 60W across all four sensors; future-proofs for heater or additional IR boost on cold/foggy nights.
  • IP67 & IK10 Ratings: IP67 withstands complete dust sealing and water immersion to 1 meter for 30 minutes; IK10 impact resistance (20-joule vandalism hits) protects against intentional damage. Mandatory for outdoor unattended deployments.
  • Built-in Microphone & Audio I/O: 2-way mic enables audio correlation during incident review and supports line-in/out for external speakers or intercoms on security-event response.
  • Edge Analytics (Deep Learning): On-camera people detection, vehicle detection, and line-crossing intrusion analytics run locally. Reduces VMS server load, enables sub-second local alarm response, and shrinks cloud bandwidth if used in hybrid architectures.

Each of the four sensor channels can be aimed independently via pan (0°–360°) and tilt (0°–65°), allowing operators to frame specific zones of interest — entrance driveways, loading docks, perimeter fence lines — without cropping or losing the full 360° awareness. This flexibility is crucial on sites where architectural or landscape features demand asymmetric framing across a panoramic deployment.

Compression and bitrate management is critical on multi-channel systems. A single Q84 in full-resolution, full-frame-rate mode (four channels × 5MP @ 30fps) generates significant network traffic. H.265 encoding shrinks the footprint; pair it with event-triggered or time-of-day recording schedules (high bitrate during business hours, lower bitrate or motion-only after-hours) to keep NVR/cloud storage within budget. ONVIF Profile S/G/T/M compliance ensures the camera integrates with Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, ExacqVision, and other mainstream platforms without proprietary middleware.

Power flexibility is a practical advantage. Many outdoor sites lack spare 24V DC runs; PoE++ (802.3bt) means a single Cat6A cable from a powered switch handles all four sensors, mic, and future expansion (heater, IR booster). Standard PoE (802.3af) is insufficient — the Q84 requires PoE++ Class 6 (up to 90W per port). Verify your switch has PoE++ ports and sufficient total budget before ordering; retrofitting power infrastructure on a rooftop or pole is expensive.

The IR system's 50-meter range is adequate for mid-size parking lots, fenced perimeters, and transit stations. Beyond 50 meters in total darkness, IR efficacy drops and IR washout (overexposed near-field) becomes problematic; in such cases, supplement with external lighting or accept lower identification distances. The color sensitivity (<0.002 lux) is exceptional and enables useful color recognition on moonlit nights — a differentiator versus standard low-light cameras that require brighter ambient light to maintain usable chroma.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've deployed the ACTi Q84 across a range of wide-area surveillance scenarios — university quads, airport aprons, container-terminal perimeters, and big-box retail yards — and it consistently outperforms four separate single-perspective cameras in terms of total cost of ownership and operational simplicity. The four-sensor panoramic design eliminates the architectural compromise of multi-camera arrays (cable runs, PoE switch ports, mounting brackets, NVR channel licenses) and delivers situational awareness in a single fixed dome. On a 200-meter campus perimeter, swapping four 5MP fixed cameras for one 20MP Q84 reduces your NVR channel count, consolidates cabling, and improves situational continuity — you're not stitching overlapping feeds or managing blind spots between independently aimed cameras.

That said, the Q84 is not a replacement for PTZ when you need active tracking or zoom-in investigation after an incident. The 2.7–13.5mm zoom range on each sensor is fixed-position; you compose your framing at installation time and live with that geometry. If your use case demands post-incident zoom or active tracking, a PTZ or a hybrid approach (Q84 for continuous awareness, PTZ for investigation) is warranted. The trade-off is deterministic: better total-cost-of-ownership and lower operational overhead versus active control flexibility.

Technical Highlights:

  • Four Synchronized 5MP Sensors: Each sensor operates on its own image-processing pipeline, yet timestamps and metadata are synchronized to sub-millisecond precision. This matters when you're correlating motion across quadrants — a vehicle entering the scene on one sensor and exiting on an adjacent sensor will have coherent motion events without temporal artifacts or timeline jitter.
  • H.265 Bitrate Efficiency: At maximum resolution (5120×1920 per channel, four channels) and 30fps, full H.265 encoding averages 8–12 Mbps total across all four channels depending on scene complexity. H.264 on the same scene runs 15–20 Mbps — a measurable difference when you're running 24/7 on a 1 Gbps uplink shared with 20+ other devices.
  • PoE++ (802.3bt) Class 6 Requirement: The Q84 draws up to 60W sustained (sensors, IR, processing, microphone). Standard PoE (802.3af, ~13W) or PoE+ (802.3at, ~30W) will not power the camera reliably. You need a switch with PoE++ ports and sufficient aggregate budget. This is a hard requirement — not negotiable — and integrators frequently miss it during initial planning.
  • Edge Deep Learning Analytics: People detection, vehicle detection, and line-crossing events are computed on the camera itself. This reduces payload to the NVR — instead of streaming raw video 24/7, you can configure the recorder to capture only when a detection event fires. On a 72-hour NVR with motion-only recording, that's a 3–5× reduction in storage footprint compared to continuous recording.
  • IP67 & IK10 Ruggedness: The dome seal and housing are rated for complete water immersion to 1 meter and vandalism impacts up to 20 joules (equivalent to a 5kg weight dropped from 40cm). In outdoor transit stations and rough neighborhoods, this durability translates to fewer warranty replacements and field service calls versus lower-rated competitors.

Deployment Considerations:

  • The Q84 requires PoE++ (802.3bt) Class 6 switches — standard PoE or PoE+ switches will not deliver sufficient power. Audit your PoE infrastructure before installation. If your existing switch lacks PoE++ ports, budget for a new managed switch or in-line PoE++ injector (adds cost and complexity on long runs).
  • Four-channel fixed-position imaging means framing is non-adjustable after installation. Spend time on-site during pre-installation planning to validate pan/tilt/zoom settings for each quadrant. Revisiting this after the dome is mounted and sealed is labor-intensive.
  • The 50-meter IR range is adequate for parking lots and perimeter fences but marginal for very large open areas (agricultural property, runway aprons) in total darkness. Supplement with external lighting if your deployment exceeds 50m and requires identification-grade detail in zero ambient light.
  • Audio correlation (built-in mic) is useful for incident post-review but not real-time alerting. Mic sensitivity and noise filtering are adequate for speech recognition at ~10 meters; beyond that, audio fidelity degrades rapidly. Plan accordingly if you need audio evidence of disruptive behavior on a large outdoor plaza.
  • ONVIF Profile S/G/T/M support ensures broad VMS compatibility, but integrators using proprietary ACTi management platforms may extract additional analytics (people counting, dwell time) unavailable to third-party recorders. Clarify your VMS choice before purchase to avoid feature surprises at commissioning.

The ACTi Q84 is the right choice for integrators and facility managers who need reliable, vandalism-resistant, 360° panoramic surveillance on a single fixed dome — especially on campuses, multi-acre parking facilities, and critical infrastructure perimeters where deploying four or more separate cameras is architecturally or economically unfeasible. For smaller single-building sites or deployments requiring active PTZ tracking, a traditional fixed or PTZ camera may be more cost-effective. Explore the ACTi catalog for complementary fixed and PTZ models if you need a hybrid approach.
