Description

ATEN UC232BF USB to RJ-45 (RS-232) Console Adapter

Overview

The UC232BF is a bus-powered USB-to-serial adapter that converts a standard USB port to an RS-232 RJ-45 female interface — the connector format used on the console ports of managed switches, routers, and rack-mount KVM equipment. If your laptop has dropped its legacy serial port but you still need direct CLI access to network gear or serial-controlled devices, the UC232BF bridges that gap without requiring an external power supply. The 1.2m cable gives enough reach from a 1U shelf to a laptop sitting on a cart without daisy-chaining extensions. Supports data rates up to 921.6Kbps, which covers the full range of baud rates used by console management sessions on ATEN KVM switches, PDUs, and serial console servers, as well as third-party rack equipment.

Compatibility

Designed for use with serial console adapters and rack-mount equipment that exposes a management port via RJ-45 RS-232 — common on ATEN KVM over IP switches (KN-series, KL-series), serial console servers (SN-series), and compatible third-party managed network switches and routers. On the host side, connects to any USB port; a macOS driver (32-bit, v1.0.061, released 2026-04-15) is available for legacy macOS 8/9 environments. Verify your OS driver requirements before deploying on modern macOS or Windows — the adapter uses an FTDI chipset, which has native or third-party driver support across most current operating systems but confirm compatibility for your specific OS version. Not suitable for RS-232 DB9 connections without a separate RJ-45-to-DB9 adapter.

Installation Notes

Bus-powered from the USB host — no wall adapter or injector needed, which keeps cable management clean on a rack crash cart or field laptop. Operating humidity is rated 0–80% RH non-condensing; avoid environments with condensation risk. The Power Status LED confirms the adapter is receiving USB power and the serial link is active, useful for quick fault isolation when a console session fails to establish. RJ-45 end terminates as female; use a standard rolled (Cisco-pinout) console cable on the device side if connecting to Cisco-style gear, or verify pinout against the target equipment's documentation.
