Description

ATEN SN3002 2-Port RS-232 Serial Console Server

Overview

The ATEN SN3002 is a 2-port RS-232 serial console server that puts out-of-band network management access on legacy serial devices — routers, switches, PDUs, and embedded controllers that have no IP interface of their own. With the SN3002 in line, a technician can reach a hung serial device over a standard 10/100 Ethernet connection without a direct console cable or a site visit. It fits data closets, remote equipment cabinets, and small branch deployments where you need reliable serial access but can't justify a larger unit. The built-in 1.5 kV magnetic isolation on the network port reduces ground-loop and surge risk when the console server shares a panel with high-voltage equipment — a real consideration in industrial or mixed-use racks.

Compatibility

The SN3002 terminates two RS-232 serial ports (Green/Orange) and connects upstream via 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. It runs Linux Real TTY (v1.1.101) and Unix Fixed TTY (v1.0.094) drivers, making it compatible with Linux and Unix hosts that need native TTY device presentation rather than a virtual COM redirect. The latest firmware is v1.0.087 (released 2025-11-13), shared across the SN3001, SN3001P, SN3002, and SN3002P family — straightforward to keep current if you already manage other units in that series. Pair with ATEN KVM and console management products for a unified out-of-band access architecture.

Installation Notes

Power accepts two paths: a DC jack at 9VDC (supplied adapter runs 100-240VAC, 50-60 Hz — suitable for international deployments) or a 3-pole terminal block rated 9-48VDC, which lets you wire directly to a DC bus in a telecom or industrial cabinet without a separate wall adapter. The semi-recessed reset pushbutton prevents accidental activation in tight rack environments. Mounting is flexible: desktop, wall, DIN-rail, or 1U rack with the optional VE-RMK1U rack kit, which is sold separately — budget for it if the SN3002 is going into a structured network rack alongside patch panels and switches. Operating humidity is 5-95% RH non-condensing; verify your cabinet meets that threshold in outdoor or warehouse enclosures. For broader serial console server options in the ATEN line, see the full family.
