The ATEN SN3001 is a single-port RS-232 serial console server that bridges legacy serial devices to a TCP/IP network over a standard 10/100Base-TX Ethernet connection. In environments where routers, switches, firewalls, PDUs, or serial-controlled security appliances need out-of-band management access, the SN3001 eliminates the need for a dedicated console terminal at the rack — administrators reach the serial port remotely over the LAN or WAN. The built-in 1.5 kV magnetic isolation protection on the network interface guards against ground loops and transient surges common in industrial and mixed-use wiring environments. Linux and Unix hosts connect via Real TTY (v1.1.101) and Fixed TTY (v1.0.094) drivers respectively, so the remote serial port presents as a native TTY device — no special terminal emulator required.
The SN3001 works with any RS-232 serial device: managed switches, serial-console routers, access control panels, video encoders, serial-port IP cameras, legacy DVRs, and industrial controllers. On the host side, Linux systems use the Real TTY driver and Unix systems use the Fixed TTY driver. Rack integration requires the separately sold VE-RMK1U 1U rack mounting kit; without it, the unit mounts on a desktop, wall, or DIN rail. For multi-port deployments, the broader ATEN serial console server family includes 2-, 4-, 8-, and 16-port variants in the SN3002/SN3004/SN3008/SN3016 series. Pair with a managed PoE switch to consolidate serial console access and network switching in the same rack segment. If you are sizing a serial console architecture for a larger deployment, refer to the serial console server category for side-by-side port-count comparisons.
Power the SN3001 either via the DC jack (9VDC adapter, 100–240VAC input — adapter sold with unit) or via the 3-pole terminal block accepting 9–48VDC, which suits direct wiring from a DC plant or UPS bus in a wiring closet or IDF cabinet. The terminal block input range makes this viable alongside 12VDC and 24VDC distribution common in access control and building automation panels. Operating humidity is 5–95% RH non-condensing; confirm the installation environment does not exceed this if deploying in an unconditioned space. The semi-recessed reset pushbutton prevents accidental factory resets in high-density installations. Firmware is field-upgradeable; current release is v1.0.087 (2025-11-13).
