Description

ATEN UC232C USB-C to RS-232 Serial Adapter

Overview

The UC232C bridges a USB-C host port to a DB-9 male RS-232 serial interface — a practical solution when deploying serial-dependent devices (legacy access control panels, serial consoles, industrial controllers, or managed switch out-of-band ports) from a modern laptop or workstation that no longer carries a native COM port. The UC232C runs at up to 921.6 Kbps, which covers the full speed range of virtually every RS-232 serial device in field use today, and draws power directly from the USB-C bus — no wall adapter, no separate power brick required. The 45cm cable length keeps the adapter tidy at a desk or rack-side console without the slack of a longer tether.

Compatibility

Connects any USB-C host (Windows, macOS through 15.0.2, Android 3.2 through 14) to DB-9 RS-232 serial devices. The Android SDK (v1.1.101) and macOS driver (v2.2.5) are both current as of mid-2025, covering modern mobile and laptop deployments. On the serial side, it presents a standard DB-9 male RS-232 port compatible with managed switches, serial console servers, access control hardware, and industrial automation equipment using 9-pin DTE interfaces. A shared driver package covers both the UC232C and the UC232B, so sites running both models manage a single driver baseline.

Installation Notes

Bus powered via USB-C — confirm the host port supplies sufficient bus power before deployment, particularly on unpowered USB-C hubs where bus power may be limited. Humidity operating range is 0–80% RH non-condensing; do not deploy in environments with condensation risk without additional enclosure protection. The adapter ships with a power LED (orange) for immediate visual confirmation of USB enumeration — useful when troubleshooting serial link issues at a rack console. Install the OS-specific driver before connecting the adapter on macOS and Android hosts; Windows driver availability should be confirmed against the ATEN support page for your Windows version.
