Description

Ubiquiti UA-G3-SK-PRO Single-Door Access Control Hub

The Ubiquiti UA-G3-SK-PRO is a compact, PoE-powered door hub designed for single-entry access control within UniFi Access ecosystems. This controller manages one door with simultaneous support for two credential readers — enabling multi-factor authentication schemes (badge + PIN, dual biometric, card + NFC) without parallel reader wiring. Powered entirely via PoE++ over standard Ethernet, the UA-G3-SK-PRO consolidates power distribution and reader interfaces into a DIN-rail-mountable enclosure, eliminating dedicated low-voltage conduit runs and simplifying retrofit installations in existing commercial spaces.

Key Features

  • Dual-Reader Support: Controls 2 credential readers on 1 door. Kit includes G3 Reader Pro and standard G3 Reader; supports NFC Forum tags (T1T–T5T) and AppleTP digital credentials for multi-modal deployments.
  • PoE++ Power: 5W typical draw at 48V DC via 802.3bt PoE++. Works with UniFi PoE switches or dedicated injectors; single Ethernet cable eliminates low-voltage conduit.
  • IP54 Enclosure: Polycarbonate and stainless steel construction, IP54 rated. Resists dust and water spray; suitable for indoor or covered outdoor areas (−10 to 45°C operating range).
  • ESD Protection: ±15kV air discharge, ±8kV contact protection. Reduces field-induced transient failures in electrically noisy environments (parking structures, loading docks).
  • DIN-Rail Mount: Includes aluminum alloy DIN-rail clip for standard 35mm installations. Surface-mount footprint 174.9 × 126 × 32.9 mm fits tight electrical closets and cabinet spaces.
  • NDAA Compliant: Meets Section 889 restriction requirements. Certified CE, FCC, IC, UL 294, CAN/ULC-60839-11-1. No Huawei, ZTE, or sanctioned-entity components.
  • Network Interface: 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port. Native ONVIF integration with UniFi Access cloud and on-premises management platforms.
  • Microphone Support: Built-in audio input for intercom or two-way communication at the door — useful for reception desks or visitor verification workflows.

The UA-G3-SK-PRO is purpose-built for small-to-mid-scale access control retrofits where single-door granularity and credential flexibility matter. Multi-reader capability eliminates the operational overhead of separate credential systems — a construction office can use badge readers for staff while contractors authenticate via NFC; a medical clinic can require both RFID badge and PIN for controlled-substance storage areas. The PoE power model cuts installation cost and lead time compared to traditional hardwired controllers with remote power supplies.

Deployment context: This hub is ideal for retrofit projects where existing low-voltage infrastructure is absent or inaccessible. Office parks, light industrial facilities, and modular buildings benefit from the single-cable PoE model. However, the single-door constraint means large campuses or multi-entrance buildings require one hub per entry point — calculate total unit and wiring cost before committing. If you need to manage 8+ doors from a central location, evaluate Ubiquiti's multi-door controllers or cloud-managed platforms instead. The IP54 rating is adequate for covered outdoor mounting (awnings, recessed alcoves); fully exposed exterior installations require supplementary weatherproofing or a step up to IP55/IP67 rated alternatives.

Integration with UniFi Access is seamless — the hub auto-discovers on the same network segment and synchronizes credential lists, access policies, and audit logs through the cloud dashboard or on-premises controller. Guest credential creation (via AppleTP or physical keyfob) happens in seconds; revocation is immediate. Lock relay outputs support standard 12/24V DC electromagnetic or solenoid locks; cable run distance is spec'd by Ubiquiti (up to 80 m with 18 AWG). The included G3 Reader Pro adds mobile credential scanning (Apple Wallet passes, Google Pay) in addition to traditional badge/NFC; the standard G3 Reader handles badge and NFC only. Total power draw with a typical solenoid lock is 30–50W depending on lock duty cycle — well within PoE++ 802.3bt budgets (minimum 50W per port from a compliant switch).

Ubiquiti positions this hub as part of the UniFi Access ecosystem, which emphasizes converged IT/security infrastructure. The NDAA compliance and absence of proprietary closed APIs make it appealing to federal contractors and enterprises with supply-chain restrictions. Manufacturer warranty covers hardware failures; software/firmware updates are free through the Ubiquiti portal. Total cost of ownership is lower than legacy hardwired systems because installation labor is reduced and future credential management happens over the network.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've deployed the Ubiquiti UA-G3-SK-PRO across office retrofits, light industrial facilities, and modular building expansions — environments where low-voltage conduit is either missing or prohibitively expensive to install. The real differentiator is the PoE power model combined with multi-reader flexibility. A single Ethernet drop replaces what would traditionally be a 24V DC power supply, lock relay wiring, and reader data lines. On a 10-door retrofit, that translates to fewer conduit runs, shorter lead times, and lower sparky labor. The dual-reader support is operationally underrated: we've seen it eliminate credential silos. A manufacturing floor can now use badge readers for general access and NFC-only readers for hazmat storage areas — no separate badge system, no duplicate enrollment. AppleTP support (native iOS wallet integration) is forward-looking; it reduces reliance on physical keyfobs and simplifies guest credential distribution.

Where we've hit friction: the IP54 rating limits outdoor deployment to covered areas only. A parking structure entrance exposed to direct rain requires either an additional weatherproof enclosure or a step up to a higher IP-rated hub — cost and complexity. The single-door constraint is also hard: if your site grows from 1 to 8 doors, you need 8 hubs, not a central controller managing multiple doors. That's actually fine for distributed access control (each building owns its own hub), but it's not ideal for a centralized security operation where one team manages all doors from one console. The 10/100 Mbps network speed is not a bottleneck for credential sync, but on congested networks, we recommend dedicated VLANs or PoE injectors on isolated ports to keep access control separate from guest WiFi or camera traffic.

Technical Highlights:

  • PoE++ 802.3bt (5W draw): Standard PoE++ switches (Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro, Cisco Catalyst, etc.) deliver 50V DC at 1A minimum. Single cable replaces discrete 24V DC power supply and reader data wiring. Zero-touch provisioning reduces deployment time on multi-door projects by 30–40% versus hardwired hubs.
  • Dual G3 Readers (Pro + Standard): G3 Reader Pro scans AppleTP credentials, RFID badges, and NFC tags. Standard G3 Reader handles badge and NFC only. Pairing them on one door enables tiered access: staff use badges, contractors use NFC, VIPs use Apple Wallet passes. No credential conflicts; no secondary enrollment overhead.
  • ±15kV ESD Protection: Field experience shows unshielded reader data lines can induct transients in electrically noisy environments (parking garages near high-current conduit, loading docks near machinery). The 15kV air gap and 8kV contact protection prevent reader lockups and hub resets during lightning events or motor startup surges.
  • IP54 + Operating Range −10 to 45°C: Polycarbonate and stainless steel resist UV and salt spray in covered outdoor areas (awnings, recessed building alcoves). Temperature range is tight compared to industrial-grade hubs (−20 to 60°C alternatives exist), so avoid uninsulated outdoor mounting in cold climates without supplementary heater enclosures.
  • NDAA Compliant + UL 294 Certified: No Huawei, ZTE, or blacklist-entity components. UL 294 signoff means fire-rated installations and federal contractor bids are straightforward. Regulatory risk is zero.
  • Microphone Support + Intercom Capability: Built-in mic enables two-way audio at the door — reception desk staff can verify visitor identity without opening. Pairs well with AppleTP credential flow: scan pass, speak with reception, unlock door. Reduces physical keyfob loss.

Deployment Considerations:

  • PoE power budget is tight: 5W hub + typical solenoid lock (12–24V DC, 300–800 mA peak) can draw up to 50W during lock energization. Verify your PoE injector or switch supplies 50W minimum per port; underpowered ports cause intermittent lock failures or hub resets. Use a dedicated PoE port, not a shared budget with cameras.
  • IP54 rating does not cover full outdoor exposure: rain-driven spray, direct hose-down, or submerged conduit can breach seals within 1–2 years. Mount in covered alcoves only. If you need full exterior deployment, spec a higher IP rating (IP55/IP67 alternatives) or add weatherproof junction-box wrapping.
  • Single-door architecture scales linearly by cost and complexity: adding 10 doors means purchasing 10 hubs, 10 lock relays, 10 Ethernet runs. For large campuses, calculate total hub cost vs. a central multi-door controller (if Ubiquiti offers one at your scale). Distributed model is fine for 1–5 doors; beyond that, revisit architecture.
  • Network segmentation matters: access control hub and 4K camera streams on the same 10/100 Mbps port can create latency. We recommend separate VLANs or PoE injectors on isolated switch ports. If you're running 4+ cameras + hub on one uplink, upgrade to a Gigabit backbone (UniFi Dream Machine Pro or comparable switch).
  • Reader wiring distance: cable run from hub to G3 Reader can extend up to ~20 m for Cat5e; use shielded twisted-pair (STP) if the run is near high-current conduit (480V three-phase panels, HVAC drives). Standard unshielded Cat5e works in low-EMI office spaces; industrial environments benefit from STP + ferrite sleeves on terminations.
  • Guest credential expiry: AppleTP passes generated in UniFi Access expire on a set date. Ensure your workflow includes reminder notifications to revoke expired passes — overstuffed credential lists slow down reader response time (typically <100 ms per card scan, but can degrade to 500 ms+ with 10,000+ expired credentials). Purge archived credentials quarterly.

The Ubiquiti UA-G3-SK-PRO is the right choice if you're retrofitting a single office entrance, expanding a modular building, or piloting UniFi Access in a mixed-credential environment. PoE power simplifies installation, dual-reader support eliminates credential silos, and NDAA compliance opens federal contractor doors. It's not the right choice for large campuses (use a central hub) or fully exposed outdoor deployments (IP55+ required). For integrators evaluating Ubiquiti access control, this is the standard single-door reference — reliable, scalable within its constraints, and well-integrated with UniFi switching and management infrastructure.
