Description

ATEN VC880 HDMI Repeater with Audio Extraction and 3D Support

Overview

The ATEN VC880 is an HDMI repeater that extends an HDMI signal up to 3 meters at full 1920x1080@60Hz (4:4:4) while simultaneously extracting embedded audio to discrete analog and digital outputs. It solves a specific install problem: AV systems where the display or projector has no built-in audio outputs, or where the audio feed needs to be split to a separate amplifier or receiver without adding a separate audio extractor inline. The VC880 handles multi-channel audio formats including DTS 5.1, Dolby 5.1, LPCM 5.1, DTS 7.1, Dolby 7.1, and LPCM 7.1 — relevant in boardrooms, command centers, or digital signage installations where a full surround decode chain sits downstream.

Compatibility

The VC880 works with any HDMI source and display operating at resolutions up to 1920x1080, including 3D content at supported refresh rates. Audio extraction covers the full range of ATEN HDMI matrix switchers and distribution amplifiers in the VE/VS series (e.g. VS0801H, VE800A) where downstream audio breakout is needed at the endpoint rather than at the matrix. Coaxial and Toslink digital outputs carry stereo, DTS 5.1/Dolby 5.1, and front-channel 2-channel downmix from higher formats — verify your receiver's supported input format against the multi-channel matrix before deploying. The stereo RCA pair (Red/White) carries a 2-channel front downmix from 5.1 and 7.1 sources; the RCA Orange port carries a separate mono or center-channel signal. Note: LPCM 5.1 and 7.1 are not passed through Toslink or Coaxial — those outputs are limited to 2-channel front extraction from those formats, which is a real constraint if you need lossless multi-channel over optical.

Installation Notes

Power is supplied via DC jack — a separate power supply is required; confirm the included or available supply matches the DC jack spec before installation. Operating humidity range is 0–80% RH non-condensing; avoid installations in high-moisture environments without enclosure protection. Firmware version v1.0.072 is current as of the source documentation. The VC880 is a passive-form passthrough device; maximum HDMI cable run of 3 meters at 1080p@60Hz (4:4:4) applies to the repeater's own output leg — factor this into your signal chain layout.
