Overview
The QNAP SS-853-PRO-US (also marketed as the TS-853S Pro) is an 8-bay network-attached storage appliance built around an Intel Celeron 2.0GHz quad-core processor with burst speeds up to 2.42GHz and 4GB DDR3L RAM — a combination that provides enough compute headroom for simultaneous multi-stream surveillance recording, RAID rebuilds, and lightweight virtualization workloads without dedicated server hardware. If your deployment involves centralizing footage from an IP camera system, managing shared storage across a mixed network, or running a small-scale VMS alongside file services, the SS-853-PRO-US fits into that workflow without requiring a separate compute node. The DDR3L platform keeps idle power draw lower than comparable DDR4 units, which matters in always-on deployments. Memory is expandable from the stock 4GB up to 8GB across two slots — relevant if you add containerized applications or increase concurrent stream counts over time.
Compatibility
The SS-853-PRO-US runs QNAP's QTS operating system, making it compatible with the broader QNAP NAS and storage lineup ecosystem including QNAP expansion enclosures and management utilities. As an 8-bay unit it accepts standard 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives. For surveillance use, QVR Pro (QNAP's onboard VMS) supports ONVIF-compliant IP cameras as well as direct integration with major camera brands — enabling the appliance to function as a standalone network video recorder without separate NVR hardware. The TS-853S Pro designation is the rebranded equivalent of the SS-853 Pro; configuration guides and QTS firmware apply to both designations interchangeably.
Installation Notes
Both memory slots are populated at stock configuration (2GB × 2); upgrading to 8GB requires replacing both modules with a matched 4GB × 2 DDR3L SO-DIMM kit — single-slot upgrades leave the second slot idle and are not a path to the 8GB ceiling. Ensure adequate rack or shelf airflow; the quad-core Celeron under sustained recording load will generate meaningful heat in enclosed cabinets. For multi-camera deployments, pair with a managed PoE switch to consolidate camera power and uplink cabling to the NAS on a single network segment, reducing latency and simplifying network segmentation for surveillance VLANs.
