Lantronix 83X-16S-100-NAA 16-Port Serial Local Manager
Overview
The Lantronix LM83X (83X-16S-100-NAA) is a 16-serial-port local manager designed for out-of-band (OOB) management of network infrastructure, servers, and serial-console-enabled devices. In environments where in-band access fails — during a network outage, misconfiguration, or firmware recovery — the LM83X gives administrators a direct console path to attached equipment without depending on the production network. The 16-port configuration targets medium-density deployments: a single rack's worth of switches, routers, firewalls, or PDUs where losing in-band access would otherwise require a truck roll. If your environment runs surveillance controllers, encoders, or IP-based access control panels with RS-232 management ports, the LM83X consolidates that serial access into a single managed appliance reachable over an independent OOB network.
Compatibility
The LM83X connects to any device exposing an RS-232 serial console port — including network switches, routers, firewalls, server IPMI/BMC serial interfaces, industrial controllers, and serial-managed IP cameras or video encoders. The Lantronix console management line spans 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, and 48-port variants; the 83X-16S-100-NAA is the 16-port model. For larger deployments requiring more than 16 ports, consider stepping up within the LM83X family. For environments mixing serial and USB console access, verify device-side connector types against the LM83X's DB-9 serial interface before ordering. Compatibility with out-of-band network management appliances and managed switches follows standard RS-232 signaling — no proprietary cabling required in most cases.
Installation Notes
Verify your rack's available 1U slots and cable management path before deployment — 16 simultaneous serial runs can create significant cable bulk at the patch point. An independent management network interface is recommended to preserve true OOB isolation; connecting the management port to the same production VLAN partially defeats the purpose of a local manager. Consult the Lantronix LM83X installation guide for pinout details and supported baud rates before connecting non-standard serial devices.
