Description

Viking Electronics PRX-4 Wiegand Output Outdoor Keypad

Overview

The PRX-4 is a slim, pigtail-wired keypad that outputs 26-bit Wiegand data — the protocol spoken by virtually every commercial access control panel on the market. If you need a standalone numeric entry point to feed PIN credentials into an existing Wiegand reader port, the PRX-4 solves it without adding a full proximity reader to the installation. Measuring just 7.1" x 1.7" x 0.5", it mounts flush in tight column, door-frame, or intercom-adjacent locations where a bulkier reader assembly won't fit. The model number PRX-4 appears on the unit label and wiring documentation.

Compatibility

The PRX-4 integrates with any access control panel or controller that accepts standard 26-bit Wiegand input — including panels from HID, Lenel, Software House, Mercury Security, and comparable systems using DATA0/DATA1 Wiegand wiring. It also pairs naturally with Viking Electronics keypad and reader products in multi-credential deployments. The 12–28V DC power range means it runs directly off most panel auxiliary power outputs without a separate supply — confirm your panel's aux rail falls within that window before wiring. The PRX-4 is not a proximity reader; for card-plus-PIN capability, pair with the PRX-5, which adds 125 kHz proximity read range up to 6 inches while sharing the same 26-bit Wiegand output format.

Installation Notes

Wiring terminates via 22-gauge pigtail leads, 8 inches long — plan your junction box depth accordingly, as you'll need enough slack to reach terminal blocks without stressing the conductors. The IP66 ingress rating handles direct rain and dust in outdoor installations; the Enhanced Weather Protection (EWP) construction is specifically rated for precipitation and condensation exposure. Operating range of -40°F to 158°F covers unheated exterior enclosures in northern climates without a heater kit. Humidity tolerance up to 100% makes it viable in covered parking, loading dock canopies, and similar high-moisture environments. Mount to any standard single-gang surface — no special backbox required, though the 0.5" depth profile keeps it low-profile against metal frames. See the access control wiring guides for DATA0/DATA1 Wiegand termination practices.
