Honeywell 5853 Wireless Glassbreak Detector
Overview
The Honeywell 5853 is a wireless acoustic glass break detector operating on the 345 MHz frequency band. It uses FlexCore ASIC signal processing to analyze the sound frequency signature of breaking glass across a 25 ft (7.6 m) omnidirectional detection range with no minimum distance requirement. Four selectable sensitivity settings allow the installer to tune detection for different room sizes and ambient noise levels.
Deployment scenarios
The 5853 provides perimeter glass break protection for rooms with multiple windows where installing individual contacts on every pane is impractical. A single unit can cover an entire room. Common deployments include ground-floor residential rooms, retail storefronts, and office spaces with large glass walls or curtain walls.
Detection capabilities
The FlexCore processor detects plate, tempered, wired, laminated, film-coated, and sealed insulating glass types. Sensitivity options are Max, Medium, Low, and Lowest. Wall or ceiling mounting is supported. Operating temperature range is 14 F to 122 F (-10 C to 50 C).
Power and dimensions
The unit runs on two 3 V lithium batteries (included) with up to 10 years of battery life. Dimensions are 4.95" H x 3.09" W x 1.1" D. The 5853 is compatible with all Honeywell panels supporting the 5800-series wireless protocol.

The 5853 is the standard glass break detector I specify for any 5800-series installation with window-heavy rooms. One unit per room eliminates the cost and complexity of individual window contacts on every pane.
Technical Highlights:
- FlexCore ASIC: Dedicated signal processor reduces false alarms from non-glass acoustic events
- 10-year battery life: Dual lithium cells provide extended service life that outlasts most wireless contacts
Deployment Considerations:
- Test with an approved glass break simulator after installation since acoustic performance varies with room furnishings and ceiling height
- Place away from HVAC vents and high-noise sources that could interfere with acoustic detection
The 10-year battery life is a significant advantage for property management and monitoring companies that want to minimize truck rolls for maintenance.
