Viking Electronics E-1600-55A Emergency Phone Kit for Custom Elevator Panels
Overview
The E-1600-55A is a universal emergency phone kit from the Viking Electronics 1600A Series designed specifically for installations where the finished panel is supplied by others — elevator cabs, custom millwork enclosures, or any deployment requiring a concealed, behind-panel mount. The E-1600-55A ships as a complete kit: the phone module installs out of sight while a custom-cut panel face (not included) presents the call button and speaker grille to the user. Telephone-line powered with a 24V DC minimum talk battery and 20mA minimum loop current requirement, the unit draws no separate power supply — a genuine advantage in elevator pit and machine-room wiring runs where additional circuits are costly. Operating range is -15°F to 130°F with 5% to 95% non-condensing humidity, making it suitable for most interior elevator environments including parking structures and loading dock lobbies.
Compatibility
The E-1600-55A is purpose-built for the Viking 1600A Series platform. It is the correct kit when the project specifies a custom or architect-supplied panel face rather than Viking's own steel or stainless housings (E-1600A, E-1600-SSA, E-1600-02A, E-1600-03B). If your project uses Viking's finished enclosures — red powder-coat steel, brushed stainless, or marine-grade 316 SS — select the corresponding complete unit instead; the E-1600-55A omits that outer housing by design. For wet or washdown environments where condensation can exceed 95% RH, the companion EWP-rated variant (E-1600-55A-EWP, rated to 100% humidity and IP66) is the correct choice.
Installation Notes
The module body is 16-gauge zinc-plated steel. Wiring terminations use (4) gel-filled butt connectors — no punchdown block or terminal strip required, which simplifies field splicing to existing telephone runs. Minimum loop current must reach 20mA at the unit; verify line length and gauge against the telephone company's drop spec before roughing in. The module mounts behind the custom panel cutout; panel thickness and cutout dimensions are determined by the installer's panel design, not by Viking's spec sheet.
