Overview
The ATEN SN1148CO is a rack-mount 48-port serial console server designed for out-of-band management of network infrastructure, servers, and serial devices in enterprise data centers and IT closets. With 48 x RJ-45 serial ports and dual power inputs, the SN1148CO gives network and systems administrators reliable remote access to console ports even when the primary network path is down — the scenario where out-of-band management earns its keep. Two SFP slots provide fiber uplink options for environments where copper Ethernet to the management network isn't practical or isn't available. The SN1148CO supports five operating modes — Console Management, Console Management Direct, Real Com Port, TCP Server/Client, and UDP Server/Client — so it integrates into both traditional terminal-server workflows and modern scripted automation pipelines. An isolated 2-pin relay output (max 24 VDC, 2A) enables external alerting or device control without exposing management infrastructure to attached loads.
Compatibility
The SN1148CO is compatible with any serial device that presents a standard console port via RJ-45: routers, managed switches, servers with IPMI/serial redirect, UPS units, PDUs, firewalls, and out-of-band-capable appliances across major vendors including Cisco, Juniper, HPE, Dell, and APC. Linux hosts integrate via the Real TTY driver (v1.1.101); Unix hosts use the Fixed TTY driver (v1.1.101). Both drivers are available from ATEN directly. The unit is rack-mounted and occupies standard 1U or 2U rack space — verify rack clearance against your enclosure before ordering. Power input accepts 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 1.0A, compatible with standard US and international PDU outlets.
Installation Notes
Mount is recessed rack style — ensure the rack enclosure supports recessed front-panel mounting. A recessed pushbutton reset is provided for recovery without serial access. Operating humidity limit is 0–80% RH non-condensing; do not install in environments with condensation risk. Dual power inputs should be wired to separate PDU circuits to achieve the redundancy benefit — single-circuit dual-power wiring defeats the purpose. Relay contact rating is 24 VDC max at 2A; do not connect AC loads or inductive loads exceeding this rating without appropriate isolation relay staging. Firmware is field-upgradeable; current release is v1.1.105 (2026-01-21).
