Overview
The VM3250 is a 9U rack-mount modular matrix chassis from ATEN's Modular Digital Matrix Switcher line, built for large-scale AV distribution in control rooms, broadcast facilities, and enterprise presentation environments. It provides the physical frame and backplane for a fully configurable 32x32 signal matrix — with eight input board slots and eight output board slots, the VM3250 accommodates up to 32 inputs and 32 outputs depending on which I/O boards are populated. Maximum backplane throughput is 22.5 Gbps, which provides headroom for high-bandwidth signal formats without bottlenecking at the chassis level. A single RJ-45 management port handles network control, and EDID management supports four modes — Default, Port1, Remix, and Customized (with EDID Wizard) — giving integrators precise control over display handshakes across complex multi-output deployments. The chassis accepts 100–240 VAC input (50–60 Hz, 10A), making it compatible with standard rack power environments globally.
Compatibility
The VM3250 chassis is designed to accept ATEN modular I/O boards from the VM Series expansion board lineup. Specific compatible board families include HDMI, HDBaseT, DVI, DisplayPort, and fiber input/output boards designed for the VM3200-series chassis ecosystem — board selection determines the actual signal types and resolutions supported, since the chassis output capability depends entirely on which output boards are installed. Network control integrates with ATEN's VM-Series management software, and the RESTful API (documented in vm_restful_api, released 2021-08-05) supports third-party control system integration for Crestron, AMX, or custom IP-based controllers. Current firmware is v2.4.231 (released 2025-06-09).
Installation Notes
The VM3250 occupies 9U of rack space — plan rack layout before ordering boards, as a fully populated chassis with all eight input and eight output boards will require substantial rear-panel depth and cable management. Input power requires a 3-prong AC socket; verify rack PDU socket type before installation. Operating humidity limit is 80% RH non-condensing — unsuitable for unconditioned equipment rooms with moisture exposure. Note that ATEN documents physical dimensions for some rack-mount products using an L×W×H format rather than the standard W×D×H convention; verify orientation when planning rack depth clearance.
