Description

ATEN SN3401P 1-Port RS-232/422/485 Serial Device Server

Overview

The ATEN SN3401P is a single-port RS-232/422/485 serial device server that bridges legacy serial equipment onto a 10/100 Ethernet network. If you're running serial-based access controllers, industrial sensors, or RS-485 bus devices and need to reach them over IP without rewiring, the SN3401P handles that conversion at the edge. The built-in 1.5 kV magnetic isolation on the network port adds a layer of protection in environments where ground loops or voltage transients are a real concern — common in industrial enclosures and security panel installations.

Compatibility

The SN3401P integrates with any system that communicates over RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 serial protocols — access control panels, serial PTZ camera controllers, barcode readers, serial-based alarm panels, and industrial PLCs. On the host side, it connects to any standard 10/100 Ethernet switch or router. Linux hosts are supported via the Real TTY driver (v1.1.101), which presents the serial device as a native TTY device — no application-layer changes needed on Linux-based VMS or control servers. The optional rack mounting kit VE-RMK1U is required for 1U rack deployment; it is sold separately. Power adapter for the DC jack input is also sold separately.

Installation Notes

Three power input options give flexibility depending on the installation context: the RJ-45 port supports PoE 802.3af (48VDC), drawing power directly from a PoE-capable switch — no additional cabling needed in most structured-wiring deployments. The 3-pole terminal block accepts 9–48VDC, useful for panel-mounted installations running 12V or 24V DC bus power. The DC jack accepts a 9VDC adapter (sold separately) for bench or desktop use. Total power consumption at 9VDC is 1.18W (6 BTU) — negligible on any power budget. Operating humidity range is 5–95% RH non-condensing. Mounting options include desktop, wall, DIN-rail, and rack (with VE-RMK1U). A semi-recessed pushbutton reset prevents accidental resets in field installations.
