Description

ATEN UC232A USB to RS-232 Serial Adapter

Overview

The ATEN UC232A is a compact, bus-powered USB-to-RS-232 adapter that adds a DB-9 male serial port to any system with a USB Type-A port — no external power supply, no driver disc required for modern deployments. At 35cm, the UC232A bridges the gap between a laptop or SFF PC and legacy serial-controlled devices: managed switches with console ports, access control panels, serial PTZ cameras, and rack-mounted network equipment that still relies on RS-232 for configuration and firmware updates. The UC232A supports data rates up to 921.6 Kbps, which covers the full range of RS-232 baud rates in common use — from the 9600 bps default of most serial consoles up to high-speed POS and barcode scanner links. An orange LED confirms an active USB connection, giving a quick visual check during commissioning without opening a terminal session.

Compatibility

The UC232A works with any host that presents a standard USB Type-A port. Driver support spans Windows (legacy Win95 through current builds), macOS through 15.0.2, Linux kernel 3.0+ (generic) and Red Hat 7.3/8/9, and Android 3.2 through 14 — covering field tablets and Android-based HMIs alongside desktop workstations. On the serial side, the DB-9 male connector mates directly with the female console ports on the majority of IP camera serial interfaces, Cisco/Juniper/HPE console rollover cables (via a standard DB-9 female adapter), and RS-232-controlled PTZ receivers and video matrix switchers common in NVR and matrix installations. If your serial device uses a DE-9 female (the standard
