The KE6940AR is the receiver unit in ATEN's KE6940 KVM over IP extension system, designed for deployments where a remote operator workstation must drive two DVI-I monitors from a centrally located host machine over a standard IP network. The KE6940AR pairs with its transmitter counterpart to extend keyboard, mouse, dual-display video, audio, and serial signals across a LAN — keeping compute hardware locked in a secure equipment room while delivering full 1920×1200 at 60Hz to both displays at the operator station. Sub-5ms latency means the experience at the remote end is indistinguishable from sitting at the host, which matters in control room environments where video wall operators or security dispatchers need responsive cursor and keyboard feedback across a dozen stations simultaneously.
The KE6940AR is the receiver half of the ATEN KE6940 system and requires a matching KE6940AT transmitter to function — it does not operate standalone. It is compatible with the broader KVM over IP extender family within the KE6900 series, and can be managed through ATEN's CCKM (CC2000 or KE Matrix Manager) software for matrix-mode deployments where multiple transmitter-receiver pairs share host and client resources. The SFP slot supports fiber uplinks for longer campus runs where copper Ethernet falls short, while the RJ-45 port handles standard 1Gbps LAN segments. Keyboard and mouse connectivity is USB. A slide switch on the unit selects between Extension mode and RS-232 Config mode — RS-232 Config is for initial setup and firmware recovery, not normal operation.
Rack-mount form factor — note that ATEN expresses physical dimensions for rack products in L×W×H order, not the conventional W×D×H. Operating humidity is rated 0–95% RH non-condensing, so the receiver must be installed in a climate-controlled space; uncontrolled outdoor or warehouse-edge locations require an enclosure. Current firmware is v1.7.164 (released 2024-05-24); update via the ke6900a-ke6940a-v1.7.164.zip package before commissioning in a new matrix deployment to avoid compatibility mismatches with transmitter-side firmware. For network infrastructure planning, dedicate a VLAN to KVM-over-IP traffic to prevent latency spikes from competing video or storage traffic on shared segments.
