Overview

The K-1705-3-EWP is a telephone-line-powered video entry phone built for harsh outdoor access points — apartment building entries, secure facility doors, and covered vestibules where standard entry phones fail from moisture intrusion or vandal damage. It pairs a 420-line composite video camera with a heavy-duty metal keypad and 14-gauge louvered 316 stainless steel faceplate, all rated IP66 for direct water exposure. The EWP variant adds Enhanced Weather Protection over the base Viking Electronics K-1705-3, making it the correct choice for fully exposed exterior locations rather than sheltered installations. The unit is telephone-line powered — no separate power supply needed for the intercom function — while the onboard camera draws 6–22V DC at 150mA from an independent supply.

Compatibility

Integrates directly into any POTS-based entry system or door-phone controller that accepts a 0.5 REN load and a 25V AC RMS minimum ring voltage. Video output is 1 Vp-p composite NTSC at 75 ohms — connects to any standard analog video monitor, DVR input, or video door-phone controller accepting CVBS. For surface-mount installations, Viking's optional VE-6x7 surface-mount box is the correct accessory; flush mounting uses the included rough-in box (114mm × 140mm × 64mm). The K-1705-3-EWP is the EWP-hardened variant of the K-1705-3 series; the access control ecosystem also supports the K-1775-3 series for installations requiring proximity card reader integration (26-bit Wiegand, 125kHz). Maximum wire run is 1,000 ft on standard telephone cable using the included gel-filled butt connectors — practical for multi-tenant buildings without home-run conduit to every unit.

Installation Notes

The faceplate requires a T-10 Torx security bit — a deliberate anti-tamper choice, not a standard Philips or hex. Camera tilt adjusts ±20° vertical and ±30° horizontal, giving installers enough range to cover stairwells, ramps, or angled approaches without shimming the backbox. Operating range of -30°F to 150°F covers northern climates and sun-baked desert environments equally. Humidity rating is up to 100%, consistent with IP66 — condensation and rain are non-issues; submersion is not rated. Speaker output tops at 70 dB at 1 meter, sufficient for typical vestibule noise floors but not for high-ambient-noise loading docks. Two gel-filled butt connectors are included for weatherproof field splices on the telephone pair.
