Viking Electronics SA-X12 Self Amplified Paging Expander/Adapter
Overview
The SA-X12 bridges the gap between any existing paging or background music system and Viking's self-amplified speaker line. It accepts audio from virtually any source — 600 ohm line level, 4/8/16 ohm speaker taps, or 25V/70V distributed paging systems — combines it with 40VDC on the 2-wire run, and delivers both power and audio to up to 12 Viking self-amplified speakers over a single cable pair. If you're retrofitting an existing PA infrastructure to use Viking self-amplified speakers without rewiring for separate power home-runs, the SA-X12 is the adapter that makes it possible.
Compatibility
The SA-X12 is designed exclusively for Viking Electronics self-amplified speakers that operate on the Viking 2-wire protocol (40VDC + audio combined). It accepts audio input via 1x 2.1mm barrel jack or through the 6-position cage clamp screw terminal block, supporting any of these upstream sources:
- 600 ohm line level — integrates cleanly with commercial telephone paging ports and most IP paging adapters including Viking's own paging adapter lineup
- 4, 8, or 16 ohm speaker-level outputs — connects directly to conventional PA amplifier speaker taps, no transformer needed
- 25V and 70V distributed paging systems — drop into existing 70V commercial PA installations and convert the zone to Viking self-amplified speakers without replacing the head-end amplifier
Supports up to 12 Viking self-amplified speakers per SA-X12 unit. For larger zones requiring more speaker drops, additional SA-X12 units can be deployed in parallel from the same audio source.
Installation Notes
Powers from 120V AC with an included 13.8V AC 1.25A adapter — the unit requires a standard AC outlet near the installation point; this is not a PoE or low-voltage DC powered device. Wiring terminates on six cage clamp screw terminals, which accept fine-stranded and solid conductors without ferrules. Operating environment is rated 0°C to 32°C (32°F to 90°F) at 5–95% non-condensing humidity — suitable for conditioned interior spaces only; do not install in unconditioned mechanical rooms or exterior enclosures. Unit dimensions are 135mm × 90mm × 45mm; plan enclosure space accordingly when mounting inside a structured wiring enclosure or telecom backboard.
