Description

Comnet FDC1M Fiber Optic Cable Break Monitor

Overview

The Comnet FDC1M is a single-channel fiber optic cable break monitor designed to detect interruptions in fiber optic runs feeding surveillance systems, remote sensors, or network infrastructure. It monitors 1300 nm wavelength signals over either multimode (up to 12 km / 7.5 mi) or single-mode (up to 36 km / 22.4 mi) fiber, and triggers a relay contact (30 VDC @ 0.5 A) within 0.5 milliseconds when fiber continuity is lost—critical for systems where detection latency matters. The FDC1M mounts in a single rack slot and draws only 1 W, making it suitable for dense monitoring deployments where power and space are constrained.

Compatibility

This monitor integrates into fiber optic backbone architectures feeding IP security camera systems, remote NVR sites, or managed access control networks. It works with any multimode or single-mode fiber system running 1300 nm monitoring wavelengths and terminating in ST connectors. The relay output (terminal block connection) can drive a security system alarm input, trigger a VMS notification circuit, or feed a building management system (BMS) alarm panel. Verify your fiber run distance and mode (multimode vs. single-mode) before deployment—the 12 km multimode limit is typical for campus-scale runs; single-mode is the choice for extended metro or long-haul links.

Installation Notes

Power input accepts 8–27 VDC, so it integrates into standard 12 VDC or 24 VDC security supplies without dedicated converters. Operating temperature range of −40°C to +75°C supports outdoor enclosures and uncontrolled environments; storage temperature to +85°C covers shipping and warehouse conditions. Humidity tolerance (0–95% RH) means the unit itself requires no special drying. Optical connector is ST (straight tip); ensure your fiber patch cords and wall terminations also terminate in ST ends. The relay contacts are dry (no embedded power), so you provide the 30 VDC signaling voltage from your alarm circuit. MTBF rating exceeds 100,000 hours—typical for passive optical monitors.
