Description

HPE P48897-B21 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe Tri-Mode Backplane Kit

Overview

The HPE P48897-B21 is a factory-new x4 U.2 NVMe tri-mode backplane kit designed for HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 servers configured in the 8 Small Form Factor (8SFF) drive bay layout. If you're expanding NVMe storage density in a Gen11 DL360 without adding an external enclosure, this kit provides the internal backplane infrastructure to connect additional U.2 NVMe drives directly to the system board — no external cabling runs, no separate controller shelf. The NVMe interface means drives bypass the traditional SAS/SATA stack entirely, delivering the low-latency, high-bandwidth throughput that NVMe was architected for.

Compatibility

This kit is designed specifically for the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 platform in the 8SFF drive bay configuration. It is not interchangeable with Gen10/Gen10 Plus backplanes — HPE backplane generations are not backward or forward compatible. Verify your server's existing backplane and bay count before ordering. The x4 U.2 NVMe interface requires NVMe U.2 (SFF-8639) drives; standard SAS or SATA drives will not seat or function on this backplane. This kit is suited for enterprise server storage deployments requiring direct NVMe connectivity in a 1U chassis — including database acceleration, VDI boot storage, and high-throughput data ingest workloads where PCIe-direct storage matters. The tri-mode designation indicates support for NVMe as the operative protocol in this configuration context.

Installation Notes

Installation is internal to the DL360 Gen11 chassis and requires standard HPE service procedures — power down, remove the access panel, and seat the backplane into the designated SFF bay slot per HPE's Maintenance and Service Guide for the DL360 Gen11. Ensure the system's storage controller and firmware revision support the tri-mode backplane before commissioning drives. This is a server component intended for integrator or data center technician installation; end-user self-installation without familiarity with 1U rack server internals is not recommended.
