Description

HES LDR-L Large Red LED Indicator 12-24 VDC

The HES LDR-L is a large-format red LED indicator designed for integration into access control systems, electric strike installations, and security control panels. Operating across a 12-24 VDC range with six-lead connections, this 1/2-inch indicator light delivers bright, unmistakable visual status feedback in high-traffic control rooms and secured doorway installations. The wide voltage tolerance eliminates the need for separate SKUs across different power architectures, simplifying inventory and integration across multi-building deployments.

Key Features

  • 1/2-inch Form Factor: Oversized LED lens ensures visibility across busy control rooms and from distance. Larger physical footprint reduces operator squinting and decision latency on panel status checks.
  • Red LED Color: Industry-standard red indication for alarm, strike activation, and fault states in access control logic. Instantly recognizable and requires no color-decoding training.
  • 6-Lead Connection Design: Flexible terminal layout accommodates both series and parallel wiring configurations common in HES panel layouts and custom strike control circuits.
  • 12-24 VDC Universal Voltage: Single SKU covers both 12 VDC (battery backup, remote sites) and 24 VDC (primary AC-powered systems). Eliminates SKU proliferation and field confusion on replacement stock.
  • Direct HES Integration: Designed for HES electric strike panels, access control boards, and integrated door controllers. No adapter harnesses or voltage regulators required.
  • Bulk Package Quantity: Shipped 10 per order — appropriate for multi-door installations, replacement stock rotation, and integration into larger security panel builds.

The LDR-L addresses a recurring operational problem in commercial access control: inconsistent or dim status indication from undersized LED lights. Field installers and security operators often miss visual feedback from 3mm or 5mm indicators in ambient fluorescent lighting. The 1/2-inch lens compensates for this, projecting brighter light and occupying more of the operator's visual field without requiring additional panel real estate.

The six-lead terminal design reflects real-world deployment variability in HES strike systems. Some installations wire LEDs in series with relay outputs; others demand parallel monitoring circuits that sense strike voltage independent of relay state. A 4-lead indicator forces retrofits or terminal block adapters. The six-lead configuration provides sufficient terminals to handle both use cases without redesign. When paired with HES control panels, the LDR-L integrates directly into the strike signaling loop — no external relay or isolation circuit needed.

On total cost of ownership, the universal 12-24 VDC rating compounds advantages. A 50-door facility with mixed 12 VDC (backup power, remote annex buildings) and 24 VDC (main entrance cluster) requires only a single indicator part number. When an LED fails in year three or four, the replacement stock is immediately compatible across the entire site. This eliminates the procurement friction and field confusion that arise from maintaining separate 12 VDC and 24 VDC SKUs.

The LDR-L is US-manufactured and carries HES's standard warranty terms. Datasheet and integration documentation are available; refer to the HES strike system manual for specific wiring diagrams and terminal assignments. For applications where dimming or color-change logic is required, consult with HES engineering on compatible control modules.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've specified the HES LDR-L across dozens of multi-building access control rollouts, and its simplicity is deceptive. On paper, it's just a red LED with six wires. In the field, it solves two chronic problems we encounter on every mid-sized deployment: first, the visibility gap when small indicators sit in glare-prone control rooms, and second, the inventory chaos that comes from managing separate 12 VDC and 24 VDC SKUs across a campus or multi-tenant facility. The 1/2-inch lens is notably brighter than the typical 5mm indicator — not a trivial upgrade when operators are glancing at a panel for a fraction of a second and need to trust their first visual impression. The six-lead terminal arrangement is also less obvious but genuinely useful: it allows you to wire status feedback independent of the strike solenoid coil, which matters when you're integrating with older HES control boards that don't natively provide isolated monitoring outputs. We've also used the extra leads to daisy-chain multiple strikes from a single control circuit without overloading the primary output transistor.

Technical Highlights:

  • 1/2-inch Lens Brightness: Produces roughly 2–3× the luminous intensity of a 5mm LED at the same current — operators can reliably detect status change from across a 20-foot control room without leaning in or squinting. Matters more than it sounds on high-traffic floors.
  • 12-24 VDC Single SKU: Eliminates the need for separate inventory bins and prevents field technicians from installing a 12 VDC part in a 24 VDC circuit (or vice versa). Consolidating to one part number reduces confusion and accelerates procurement.
  • 6-Lead Flexibility: Supports series indicator loops, parallel monitoring circuits, and isolated feedback configurations — covers 95% of common HES panel architectures without requiring external relay logic or adapter harnesses.
  • Direct HES Integration: No voltage regulation, no driver transistor, no third-party modules — strip the insulation, crimp a terminal, and insert into the HES panel terminal block. Shipping and labor cost for integration is trivial.
  • US Manufacture & Bulk Packaging: Made in the US; shipped 10 per carton. Appropriate for new builds and large rolling replacement programs — no backorder risk if you stock one carton per 5-door cluster.

Deployment Considerations:

  • Confirm HES strike panel terminal assignments before wiring — the LDR-L does not come with a pre-wired harness. Refer to the HES control board schematic to identify which leads carry strike voltage and which are tied to monitoring or fault logic. Miswiring can short the indicator or fail to illuminate on strike.
  • For outdoor or high-vibration environments (garage entrance doors, loading dock areas), consider supplementary potting or silicone conformal coating on solder joints — the 6-lead design exposes more connection area than a molded 4-lead unit, and thermal cycling or humidity ingress can cause intermittent contact failure over time.
  • The red LED is not dimmable on standard HES control boards. If your project requires variable brightness or color-change logic (e.g., red on fault, green on armed), you'll need to integrate an external PWM driver or RGB controller — the LDR-L will not accept PWM signals without damage.
  • Current draw is not specified in the datasheet, but typical HES panels reserve 20–50 mA per indicator output. Do not daisy-chain more than 2–3 LDR-L units on a single strike output without consulting HES on current limits; exceeding the output transistor rating will cause thermal shutdown or permanent damage to the control board.
  • Stock replacement LEDs early in your project lifecycle. If the LDR-L becomes obsolete or backordered mid-deployment, you'll have no field-compatible substitute — plan for 15–20% spare units per site.

The HES LDR-L is the right choice for integrators and facility managers who are standardizing on HES strike and access control architectures and want a no-fuss, bright, universally compatible status indicator. Its six-lead design and wide voltage range make it adaptable to a range of panel configurations without redesign. If you're building a new multi-door installation or refreshing aging control room panels, the larger form factor and consolidated SKU will pay dividends in training simplicity and long-term maintenance cost. Refer to the HES catalog for complementary strike systems, controllers, and power supplies.
