Description

Geovision GV-COM USB to RS-485 Media Converter

Overview

The Geovision GV-COM (model GV-COM V3) is a USB-to-RS-485 serial media converter that adds one RS-485 port to a computer or control station. It bridges the gap between standard USB connections on modern control hardware and RS-485 2-wire devices—PTZ cameras, GV-Data Capture Boxes, and other legacy or specialized surveillance hardware that require RS-485 serial control. Deploy this when your NVR, workstation, or integrator control software lacks native RS-485 output or when you need to extend PTZ control across distributed systems without dedicated control cards.

Compatibility

Designed for Geovision surveillance systems and compatible with any RS-485 device that accepts 600–115,200 bps serial communication. Supports Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and Server 2008 R2 / 2012 / 2012 R2 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Driver installation is automatic—Windows Plug and Play detects the device as an XR21B1411 USB UART and prompts for the driver software disk. Once installed, the GV-COM appears as a COM port in Device Manager, making it compatible with any VMS or control software that can address a standard serial port.

Installation Notes

The GV-COM draws power directly from the USB bus (USB 2.0 Full Speed, 12 Mbps). No external power supply is required. Dimensions are compact—325 × 18 × 9 mm (12.8 × 0.7 × 0.35 in)—suitable for desktop, wall-mount, or DIN-rail mounting in control rooms and telecom closets. Operating temperature range is 0–50°C (32–122°F) with 5–95% non-condensing humidity; do not expose to moisture or condensation. RS-485 communication supports None, Even, or Odd parity; 7 or 8 data bits; 1 or 2 stop bits; and RTS/CTS or XON/XOFF flow control. All signal lines feature 8 kV ESD protection, guarding against static discharge during outdoor cable runs or connector swaps.
