DSC PG9872 PowerG Wireless Ceiling-Mount PIR Motion Detector
Overview
The DSC PG9872 is a wireless 360-degree ceiling-mount passive infrared motion detector on the PowerG 915 MHz FHSS platform with 128-bit AES encryption. It provides a 10.6 m (35 ft) diameter detection pattern from a mounting height of 2.4 to 3.6 m (8 to 12 ft), covering an entire room from a single ceiling-mounted position using a Fresnel lens.
Deployment scenarios
Ceiling-mount PIR detectors are suited for open rooms where wall-mount detectors would have obstructed coverage patterns due to furniture, fixtures, or room geometry. The PG9872 is commonly deployed in retail spaces, conference rooms, and open-plan offices where 360-degree coverage from a single point is more effective than multiple wall-mount units. The wireless PowerG protocol eliminates the need to run sensor wiring to the ceiling.
Detection specifications
The Fresnel lens provides 360-degree PIR coverage in a 10.6 m diameter pattern. Mounting height range is 2.4 to 3.6 m. Operating temperature is 0 C to 49 C (32 F to 120 F). Dimensions are 108 mm diameter x 42 mm (4.25 x 1.65 in).
Communication and power
PowerG 915 MHz FHSS with 128-bit AES encryption. Wireless range up to 2 km (6,500 ft) open air. Front and rear tamper protection. Powered by a single CR123A lithium battery with up to 5 years of life. Periodic supervisory check-in signals.

The PG9872 is the detector I choose for rooms where wall-mount placement is difficult or where furniture and partitions would create coverage gaps. A single ceiling-mount unit can replace two or three wall-mount detectors in an open-plan space.
Technical Highlights:
- 360-degree coverage: Single ceiling-mount point covers an entire room without the blind spots inherent in wall-mount detectors
- PowerG range: Up to 2 km open-air wireless range accommodates large facilities without repeaters
Deployment Considerations:
- Ceiling height must be between 2.4 m and 3.6 m for specified coverage pattern accuracy
- In rooms with ceiling fans or large pendant fixtures, verify the detection pattern is not obstructed by testing after installation
The wireless PowerG protocol is particularly valuable for ceiling-mount applications since running sensor wiring to the ceiling is often the most labor-intensive part of a hardwired installation.
